Sour & H₂S Service (NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156)
For sour service, 316 and 316L handle mild H₂S duty just fine. As partial pressures and stress climb, you move up to Duplex 2205, then Super Duplex 2507, and finally Inconel 625 or 718. What are the three or four types of fittings and their uses?
Ask about fittings for instrumentation, and you'll typically hear about three or four types. Compression fittings use a tube-to-tube or threaded connection with a seal. Face-seal fittings, such as VCR and VCO, handle high purity and vacuum applications. Flare fittings come in two angles, 37° JIC and 45° SAE. Then there are weld fittings. Grouped broadly, that's three families: compression, flare and face-seal. Count weld fittings on their own, though, and the total climbs to four, each with its own use, rounded out by instrumentation valves, manifolds and regulators for isolation and control.
Which alloy should I use for sour (H₂S) service?
316 and 316L cover mild sour service well enough on their own. Push into aggressive sour conditions or high-pressure duty, though, and the material needs to step up to Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507, or Inconel 625/718.
