Oil & Gas Service Conditions: Sour H₂S, High-Pressure, Chloride & CO₂

Instrument lines in oil and gas service face a rough set of threats. Sour gas, or H₂S, brings the risk of sulfide-stress cracking and hydrogen-induced cracking. Wellhead and test pressures can climb into the tens of thousands of psi. Chloride from produced water eats away at metal, carbonic acid from CO₂ does its own damage, and refineries add high-temperature sulfidation to the mix. Each of these threats points to a particular alloy, product family and standard.

The matrix below matches each service condition to its recommended construction. Values are drawn from the applicable published standards, and they can be adjusted to fit specific requirements. Final material selection isn't automatic, though; it stays the specifier's or process engineer's call.

Valves qualify to the applicable valve standards, ASME B16.34 and the relevant API series (API 6D, API 598, API 602), while compression tube fittings carry ASTM F1387 performance qualification.

Alloys for Sour & Corrosive Oil & Gas Service: 316L to Inconel

Crestflo makes oil and gas fittings and valves spanning the entire sour-service and corrosion-resistant-alloy range. Picking the right grade comes down to three things: H₂S partial pressure, chloride level, and temperature. You'll find composition and PREN figures on each material's page.

316 and 316L remain the standard choice for sweet and mild-sour instrument lines, provided the application stays within NACE MR0175 hardness and environmental limits. See 316/316L.

For chloride exposure and pitting resistance in produced water, 254 SMO (6Mo) and AL-6XN step in as high-PREN super-austenitics. See 254 SMO and AL-6XN.

Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex 2507 add strength on top of resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking, making them suited to chloride and CO₂ service. See super duplex 2507 and duplex 2205.

What is an instrumentation fitting?

Instrumentation fittings are precision fluid-system components, think tube or compression fittings, ferrules, or fitting-ended valves. They connect, seal, or isolate small-bore instrument lines that carry process fluid to gauges, transmitters, and analyzers. They're not process pipe fittings, and they're not structural fittings either.

What are fittings in oil and gas?

In oil and gas instrumentation, "fittings" means the tube fittings, ferrules, adapters and valves used on impulse, sampling, hydraulic and pneumatic lines. Sizes typically run 1/16" to 2" OD. Alloys span 316L through high-nickel grades. Each one is rated for the line's pressure and its sour-service exposure.

What is instrumentation in oil and gas?

Instrumentation covers the measurement and control systems on wells, pipelines and refineries: pressure, flow, level, temperature and analysis. Fittings and valves make up the fluid-system hardware behind it, connecting those instruments to the process safely.

What pressure ratings are available?

Cone-and-thread and high-pressure fittings run up to 30,000 PSI (30,000 psi). Manifolds top out at 10,000 psi, double block & bleed valves at 3,000 psi, all built to ASME B16.34. These figures follow the applicable standards, and they're customizable to whatever the job calls for.

Are your fittings a drop-in replacement for Swagelok or Parker?

Yes, the dimensional interchange has been qualified under ASTM F1387. Crestflo calls its fittings interchange equivalents. It never labels them "compatible," and it doesn't intend for them to be mixed. Crestflo has no affiliation with those other brands. If you need a cross-reference, just ask the engineering team for one.

Do you provide material traceability?

Every part comes with a heat/lot number. EN 10204 3.1 material test certificates are standard; 3.2 is available on request. PMI and testing records can be provided.

What is your lead time and where are the products made?

Standard items ship from ready stock. Specials are made to order, and those typically take 6 to 8 weeks to deliver. Material origin is Indian by default, though we can source US or European melt on request. Where domestic-melt or TAA-eligible supply is required, we provide full material traceability.

Do you serve the Permian, Houston and Bakken?
