Instrumentation Needle Valves
An instrumentation needle valve is built for fine throttling. It's a threaded or tube-end flow-control valve whose tapered stem, the needle, seats into a matching conical seat. The result: precise, repeatable regulation and positive isolation of gas or liquid, suited to instrument, sampling and gauge-isolation service.

On this page, "needle valve" refers specifically to an instrumentation needle valve used for pressure work, sampling, calibration and gauge isolation. It doesn't mean a carburetor or float needle valve, and it isn't a plumbing shut-off either.
This valve carries several other names in the field: instrument needle valve, precision throttling or metering-pattern valve, bar-stock or integral-bonnet needle valve, hard-seat or regulating-stem needle valve. In gauge-isolation duty, it's called a gauge valve or gauge-root valve. When placing an order, specifiers typically spell out the pattern (angle/right-angle or straight/in-line), the bonnet (integral-bonnet or union-bonnet), the mounting (panel-mount or bulkhead), and the pressure class (standard or high-pressure).
What Is a Needle Valve & How Does a Needle Valve Work?
A needle valve does its work by driving a slender, taper-ground stem into a close-fitting conical seat. Turn the handle, and the fine-pitch thread on the stem advances it; the annular gap between needle and seat closes gradually rather than all at once. A small movement of the handle, then, translates into a small, nearly linear shift in flow. That's the geometry behind the valve's defining behavior: a low flow coefficient (Cv), fine resolution, and steady throttling even at the bottom of its range, right where a quarter-turn valve would already be acting like an on/off switch.
The tapered stem also seats metal-to-metal at full close. That's what lets the same valve that meters flow also shut it off completely, making it the workhorse for isolating and bleeding pressure down to a gauge, transmitter or analyzer line. Ball valves, by contrast, are built mainly for quarter-turn on/off duty. A needle valve gives something up in return: flow capacity, traded for control precision. Needle Valve Types: Angle, Straight, Multi-Port & Panel-Mount
Instrumentation needle valves come configured by flow path and by mounting style. Which pattern you pick depends on how the valve actually sits, whether it's inline on the tubing run or mounted on the panel.

Straight and angle bodies handle most pressure, sampling and gauge-isolation duties. Multi-port and panel-mount patterns get specified when board layout or a block-and-bleed function drives the design.
Bonnet & Body Construction: Integral-Bonnet, Union-Bonnet & Bar-Stock
Crestflo machines its needle valves from bar stock on in-house CNC, VMC and EDM equipment. That gives a dense, defect-controlled body, with full heat-number traceability built in. Two bonnet constructions are on offer. In the integral-bonnet design, the bonnet's machined as one piece with the body, for the best possible stem alignment and pressure integrity. The union-bonnet design takes a different approach: a threaded union nut retains the bonnet, so it can be serviced in the field and the packing adjusted.
A non-rotating regulating stem tip is available, so it meters against the seat without spinning. That protects the seat finish and keeps repeatability high over many cycles. Forged-body options exist too, built for higher-pressure or larger-envelope needs. Every configuration can be tailored to what the job requires.
Needle Valve Seat, Stem & Packing: Hard-Seat, Regulating-Tip, PTFE & Graphite
The standard seat is integral: a hard metal seat built for durable, metal-to-metal shut-off. Where fine, non-galling control at low flow matters most, a regulating soft-tip or non-rotating-tip stem is available instead. Stems use a rolled or precision-ground fine thread, and they're available with a back-seating shoulder as well.

Needle Valve Sizes (1/16″–1″) & End Connections: NPT, BSP, Tube
Needle valves come in sizes from 1/16" to 1", with both imperial fractional and metric ends available. Connections are threaded, either NPT to ASME B1.20.1 or BSPP/BSPT in parallel and tapered forms. Or they're tube-fitting and compression ends instead, built for female-to-female, male-to-female, or male-to-male port arrangements. Thread and OD dimensions follow whichever standard applies, and they're customizable to whatever the job requires.

High-Pressure Needle Valve Ratings & Temperature Limits
Instrumentation needle valves throttle flow, so they run at low flow coefficients, typically well under Cv 1.0. Orifice diameter and stem taper set the exact Cv. Standard bar-stock instrumentation needle valves commonly carry a cold working pressure rating up to 6,000 psi (414 bar). High-pressure designs go further, up to 10,000 psi (689 bar). That's the usual range across the industry. Pressure-temperature ratings follow the applicable valve design standard, and they can be customized to requirement.
Crestflo valves are rated for maximum service temperature based on the seat and packing seal, not the body alloy, check the packing table above for those limits. They meet ASME B16.34, along with the relevant API testing standards (API 598 / API 602), covering pressure-temperature basis as well as shell and seat testing. Needle Valve Materials: 316 Stainless, Monel, Hastelloy C-276 & Duplex
Bodies and stems come machined from bar stock to ASTM A479/A276, in stainless, duplex, super-austenitic and nickel alloys. No brass, ever. Every grade listed below links through to its own material page. Keep in mind, though: this valve ships in instrumentation form only, not as bar, sheet or mill product.

Standards, Certifications & Traceability
Crestflo holds certification to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and PED. Its needle valves meet the standard approvals used across instrumentation valves. ASME B16.34 sets the design and pressure-temperature basis. ASME B1.20.1 governs the NPT threads. Bar stock is sourced to ASTM A479 and A276. Every valve carries a heat/lot number marked on the part and ships standard with an EN 10204 MTC 3.1 certificate; MTC 3.2 with third-party endorsement is available on request. Every valve goes through hydraulic proof, burst and impulse testing, pneumatic testing, and seat and shell leak testing, with positive material identification (PMI) confirming the alloy. Non-destructive testing happens in-house; destructive testing gets outsourced to labs accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, and pressure testing follows BS EN 12266-1. What is the purpose of an instrumentation needle valve?
It runs on a tapered stem that eases into a conical seat, so a small nudge of the handle gives you a small change in flow. That's what makes it good for gauge isolation, sampling and calibration work: precise, repeatable, low-Cv control. Close it all the way and you get metal-to-metal shut-off.
Is this an instrumentation or a carburetor needle valve?
For instrumentation use only: pressure, sampling, calibration and gauge-isolation service. They're not carburetor or float needle valves. Nor are they plumbing shut-off valves.
How does a needle valve differ from a ball valve?
A needle valve throttles with real precision at low flow coefficients, and it can double as a shutoff. A ball valve, by contrast, is built for quarter-turn on/off control and moves a lot of flow fast. What sizes and end connections are available?

What materials can I get a needle valve in?
We stock 316/316L and 904L stainless, plus Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507, 254 SMO and Alloy 20. For higher-performance needs there's Monel 400, Inconel 625/825 and Hastelloy C-276, along with Titanium Gr2. Brass isn't part of the lineup. Every body and stem gets machined from ASTM A479/A276 bar stock.
What is the pressure rating of a needle valve?
Most bar-stock instrumentation needle valves carry a cold working pressure rating of 6,000 psi (414 bar). High-pressure versions push that up to 10,000 psi (689 bar). Do the valves meet NACE for sour service?
Yes, material options that meet NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156- are available for sour and H2S service. Each one ships with the matching material traceability documentation, in line with ISO 15156.
What certification and traceability come with each valve?

How can I tell if a needle valve is bad?
