What Instrumentation in Oil & Gas Midstream Covers

Midstream sits between upstream production and downstream refining. It takes in gas gathering, natural gas processing and treating, compression, pipeline transportation, metering and custody transfer, and storage and terminals. Every one of these settings calls for the same family of instrument hook-up components, just in an alloy and sour-service standard matched to the service conditions at hand.

Midstream by Its Other Names: Gathering, Processing, Transmission & Terminals

Buyers and specs don't all use the same words for this work. Some call it midstream oil and gas, others the midstream sector, still others the midstream segment, but the instrumentation scope stays the same. It covers gas gathering and gathering systems, natural gas gathering, gas treating and sweetening, amine treating, and glycol dehydration. Sulfur recovery (SRU) falls under it too, along with NGL fractionation, gas compression and compressor stations, and pipeline transmission and transportation. Pump stations, metering skids and metering stations, custody transfer and LACT units all belong here as well. So do pig launchers and receivers, pigging operations, and storage terminals, tank farms and bulk terminals.

On this page, "ball valve" and "needle valve" refer to instrumentation valves: small-bore units, mounted on a panel or skid. A "3-way ball valve" means the diverting or instrument-selector variant. "Manifold" means a 2/3/5-valve DP-transmitter manifold. A "check valve" works equally well as an NRV, or non-return valve. "Compression fitting" means an instrumentation tube fitting, and "ferrule" means a fluid-system compression ferrule.

Midstream Service Conditions: Sour Gas (H2S), CO2, Chlorides & Coastal Exposure

Pressure isn't what dictates alloy choice in midstream work. Corrosion is. The real drivers are H2S (sour service), CO2 (sweet corrosion in wet gas), chlorides carried in produced water, erosion from wet gas, and atmospheric or coastal exposure along the Gulf Coast. When H2S is in the picture, wetted metallic components have to meet NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, or NACE MR0103 if the service sits closer to refinery operations. Fugitive-emissions programs bring another layer: ISO 15848 low-leakage requirements on valves.

Alloy Selection for Midstream: 316L, 6Mo, Duplex, 825 & 625

Start at 316/316L for mild, sweet or dry service. Where chlorides threaten pitting, step up to 254 SMO / 6Mo or AL-6XN. If you need strength alongside resistance to chloride cracking, Duplex 2205 or Super Duplex 2507 is the right call. For the toughest sour and high-chloride duty, turn to Alloy 825 (also specified as Incoloy 825) or Inconel 625.

Special cases round out the range: Monel 400 for HF and reducing service, 904L and Alloy 20 for sulfuric and mixed-acid streams. Every grade is stocked only as instrumentation-grade fittings, valves and tubing, each with heat-number traceability and mill test certificates.

Standards & Compliance for Midstream Instrumentation

Crestflo instrumentation is manufactured to the standard approvals applicable to each product type. Compression tube fittings are tested to ASTM F1387 and offered NACE compliant; instrument valves and manifolds are designed to ASME B16.34, with pipeline and metering valve testing referencing API 6D and API 598 as applicable, and fire-safe and fugitive-emissions duty addressed via API 607/6FA and ISO 15848. What is instrumentation in oil & gas midstream?

Tube fittings, instrument valves, manifolds and small-bore tubing do the connecting. They link gauges, pressure and DP transmitters, and analyzers to gathering, compression, processing, pipeline-metering and storage assets. The connections they form are leak-tight, both impulse and hook-up lines, and that's what lets field instruments read and control the process.

What are "fittings" in oil & gas?

Fittings in instrumentation cover compression (ferrule) tube fittings, flare, face-seal and high-pressure connectors. Together, they form the leak-tight tube connections between instruments and process taps. Crestflo's compression tube fittings are tested to ASTM F1387 and come in single and double ferrule designs.

What alloy should I use for sour (H2S) midstream service?

Mild, sweet service calls for 316/316L as the starting point. Once conditions turn sour or chloride levels climb, you'll need grades that meet NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156: 6Mo (254 SMO) or AL-6XN, Duplex 2205 or Super Duplex 2507, Alloy 825. For the harshest streams, Inconel 625 is the answer. What actually drives the choice is the specific service: H2S partial pressure, chloride level and temperature.

Are Crestflo fittings NACE MR0175 compliant?

Yes. Crestflo offers compression tube fittings compliant with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 across the stainless and high-nickel alloy range. Heat-number traceability comes standard, along with EN 10204 3.1 material test certificates. Need 3.2 instead? Just ask.

Can Crestflo fittings replace Swagelok, Parker or Hy-Lok on a midstream project?

Yes. These are dimensional drop-in interchanges, backed by ASTM F1387 performance qualification, and they're supplied as interchange or equivalent parts. Swagelok® is a trademark of Swagelok Company. Parker® and Hy-Lok® belong to their respective owners. Crestflo isn't affiliated with them, and none of them endorse Crestflo. Ask our engineering team for your cross-reference.

What's the lead time for a midstream instrumentation package?

Ready stock covers the standard items; specials get made to order. Delivery runs 6-8 weeks, usually quicker than the 20-plus weeks you'll wait with the majors. Skid and panel builds can be done with small MOQs, and private-label programs are on offer too.

Which valves are used for pipeline pressure and DP metering?

The valve package includes needle valves, gauge-root, bleed and purge valves, and check valves for isolation and venting. There are also 2/3/5-valve manifolds at the DP transmitter. Double block & bleed and monoflange valves handle positive isolate-and-vent duties for metering and proving. Everything's built to ASME B16.34.

Is LNG upstream or midstream?

Liquefaction and LNG export mark the boundary where midstream work hands off to export. LNG runs on cryogenic service down to -196 °C, and that's different enough that we cover its instrumentation on a separate page: LNG & cryogenic.

Are these parts made in the USA?

What sizes and connections are available for midstream tube fittings?

Instrument valves span 1/16 inch to 1 inch. A tight range, but a versatile one. Connections follow the applicable standard throughout, and sizing's adjustable to whatever the job calls for.

What documentation ships with the parts?

Each part carries its heat and lot number, and every shipment comes standard with an EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate (3.2 available on request). PMI verification is offered as well, along with 100% seat and shell leak testing on manifolds. Third-party inspection can be arranged on request.
