Choosing the Right Alloy for Water & Wastewater: 316L, 904L, Super Duplex, Titanium & Hastelloy
Before anything else, water and wastewater work comes down to chloride and oxidizers. 316/316L handles the basics well enough: intake, potable water, mild biological service. But raise the chloride level, push up disinfectant strength, or let temperature climb, and it starts to pit, then crack. The alloy ladder below matches the dominant driver to the grades typically specified for wetted instrumentation components, along with the UNS designation needed for procurement. Those UNS numbers are standard published identifiers.

Use 316/316L when the water is mild. Step up as soon as chloride level, free chlorine or hypochlorite concentration, acid strength, or metal temperature crosses the grade's limit. For seawater desalination, the practical ladder runs 904L → 254 SMO / AL-6XN → super duplex 2507, with Titanium Gr2 covering chlorinated seawater. Hypochlorite and chlorine lines call for a step up to Hastelloy C-276/C-22 or titanium. Monel 400 is a niche pick, reserved for specific reducing, low-oxygen media (HF-adjacent duties or certain brackish service, for example). It doesn't belong in hypochlorite or other strong-oxidizer service, where it corrodes. Work through the logic in our corrosion-by-media × alloy matrix and material selection by service guides.
Instrument Hook-Ups, Dosing Skids, Disinfection & Analyzer Lines
The same products show up again and again across the plant, each one configured to fit the service:
- Transmitter & gauge hook-ups (pressure / DP / level / flow), isolate, block, equalize and vent a differential-pressure transmitter with a 3-valve or 5-valve manifold, backed by needle isolation valves, snubbers and gauge savers; use a double block & bleed where positive isolation is required.
- Chemical dosing & metering skids, metering valves for flow trim, check / NRV valves to block backflow, relief valves for over-pressure, and snubbers to damp dosing-pump pulsation, in an alloy matched to the chemical (Alloy 20 for sulfuric acid, 316L or nickel grades for caustic).

- Membrane (MBR / RO) & filter backwash lines, membrane bioreactor (MBR) and RO skids run permeate, backwash water and clean-in-place (CIP) chemistry; filter-backwash and membrane instrument tubing, transmitter hook-ups and isolation valves go in 316L, Duplex 2205 or 254 SMO as the chloride and oxidizing-CIP load dictates.
- Analyzer & sampling systems, pH, ORP, turbidity, chlorine-residual and TOC sample conditioning, for both grab and composite sampling, with small-bore electropolished tubing, bleed / purge valves, inline filters, grab-sampling systems and sampling cylinders.

What fittings and valves are used in water and wastewater treatment plants?
Instrument tube fittings, compression and double-ferrule, sit alongside needle and ball isolation valves. Then there are 2/3/5-valve manifolds for DP and pressure transmitters, check (NRV) and relief valves on the dosing lines, plus instrument tubing, filters, snubbers, thermowells, condensate pots and grab-sampling hardware. All of it in 316L, or a chloride- and chlorine-resistant alloy matched to the service.
What material should I use for chlorine and sodium-hypochlorite lines?
316 and 316L will pit under strong oxidizers. For chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, and similar disinfectant service, move up to Hastelloy C-276 or C-22. Chlorinated seawater calls for Titanium Gr2 instead. Don't guess on the numbers, though: put the exact media concentration and temperature on your RFQ so we can match the grade to the duty.
Which alloy is best for seawater desalination (RO) instrumentation?
For seawater chloride service, follow the ladder: 904L, then 254 SMO or AL-6XN, then super duplex 2507, and for chlorinated seawater, Titanium Gr2. High-pressure RO trains push the pressure rating too, so when you request a quote, spell out pressure right alongside the media.
Are Crestflo fittings drop-in replacements for Swagelok in a water plant?

Do you offer NSF/ANSI 61 material for potable / drinking-water contact?
Plenty of potable-water specs require NSF/ANSI 61-listed wetted materials. Put that requirement on your RFQ, and our engineering team will confirm exactly what we can supply for the application instead of guessing. We won't claim a listing that hasn't been confirmed for your part.
What valves go on a chemical-dosing / metering skid?
Metering valves handle flow trim. Check valves, or NRVs, block backflow, while relief valves guard against over-pressure. Snubbers damp the pulsation from dosing pumps. Each component's alloy has to match the chemical it handles: Alloy 20 for sulfuric acid, for instance, or 316L and nickel grades when the fluid is caustic.
Do you have sour-service (NACE) fittings for digester and biogas H₂S?
Yes. Wetted materials can be supplied compliant with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for H₂S-bearing anaerobic digester gas. Note sour service on the RFQ, and we'll apply the correct grades and hardness limits.
316L or titanium for chlorinated seawater, which should I choose?
Titanium Gr2 holds up against chlorinated seawater in a way 316L simply can't match. 316L pits and suffers crevice corrosion once seawater chloride levels come into play. For chlorinated seawater and desalination service, go with titanium Gr2, or super duplex 2507.
How do I isolate a DP transmitter in a water plant?
A 3-valve or 5-valve manifold handles the block, equalize and vent duties on the differential-pressure transmitter; place a needle isolation valve upstream of it. Crestflo builds both configurations in 316L and in corrosion-resistant alloys. Imperial or metric, either size is available.
