A double block-and-bleed (DBB) valve is an instrumentation isolation valve. It combines two independent in-line block seats with a bleed or vent point between them, all housed in a single compact body. That design lets a gauge or process take-off be positively isolated, and lets the isolation be proven before the instrument is serviced. On this page, "double block and bleed valve" refers to a small-bore instrumentation DBB, used for gauge, transmitter, DP-cell, and analyzer take-off service. Not a large-bore pipeline API 6D gate-valve DBB. That's a distinct class of device, governed by API 6D.

What Is a Double Block-and-Bleed (DBB) Valve? Function & Purpose

A double block-and-bleed valve gives you two block (seat) isolations in series, with a bleed or vent take-off sitting in the cavity between them, all cut into a single body. Close both blocks and the instrument or take-off point is isolated twice over. Open the intermediate bleed and the trapped cavity depressurizes, which lets the operator confirm the upstream block is actually holding before anyone pulls the downstream device. That double isolation, backed by a bleed you can prove, is why DBB valves take the place of two separate isolation valves plus a bleed valve on critical or hazardous instrument hook-ups, including PED-rated ones.

Let's untangle the terminology first. A single block-and-bleed pairs one block seat with a bleed. Double block-and-bleed, or DBB, adds a second block, giving you redundant isolation you can actually test. DBBB, short for double-block-double-bleed, takes it further, with two bleed points instead of one. And double isolation and bleed, DIB, describes that same two-seat isolation intent, just under a different name. DBB Valve, DIB, DBBB & Double Isolation and Bleed: Also Known As

Engineers and buyers across the industry use several names for the same component. You'll hear it called a double block-and-bleed valve, double block & bleed valve, double block bleed valve, DBB, or DBB valve. On drawings and data sheets it often shows up as an instrument double block and bleed valve, double block and bleed instrument valve, or double block and bleed isolation valve. There are function-led variants too: the double isolation and bleed (DIB) valve and the double-block-double-bleed (DBBB) valve. Sorted by isolating element, you'll also see the double block and bleed ball valve and the double block and bleed needle valve. How a Double Block-and-Bleed Valve Works: Working Principle, P&ID Symbol & Diagram

In service, both block seats sit open so flow reaches the instrument normally. To isolate the line, the operator shuts the first block, the one on the process side, then the second, the instrument-side block, and opens the bleed between them. Any pressure trapped in that intermediate cavity vents out to atmosphere or a test point. If the cavity holds nothing once the bleed is open, the first block has proven itself leak-tight, and the downstream device can come off, get calibrated, or be tested without worry. It's the bleed port that turns two seats into a double isolation you can actually verify, not just hope for.

On a piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID), the double block-and-bleed symbol appears as two block-valve symbols in series, with a bleed or vent take-off tapped into the line between them. That's the standard schematic representation. It holds regardless of whether the internal blocks are ball or needle elements. A DBB valve diagram, then, packs three functions, block, block, and bleed, into one body sitting between the process connection and the instrument.

DBB Valve Types & Configurations: Ball, Needle, Flanged, Screwed & DBBB

Instrument DBB valves get configured two ways: by isolating element and by end connection. Block seats come as ball elements for quarter-turn, full-bore isolation, or as needle/OS&Y-bonnet elements built for fine-metering-grade shut-off. The body itself can be a close-coupled bar-stock design, or a flanged block that mounts straight onto a process connection. Double Block-and-Bleed Valve Pressure Rating (to 3,000 psi), Temperature & Sizes

DBB Valve Seats & Materials: 316 Stainless, Duplex, Inconel, Monel & Hastelloy

The standard stainless steel double block-and-bleed valve is built in 316/316L, and it comes with soft (PTFE/PEEK) or hard/metal seat options plus a full corrosion-resistant-alloy ladder for chloride, sour, and aggressive-media service. Sour-service builds ship in NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant materials on request. Choose an exotic alloy when chloride pitting, sour partial pressures, or elevated temperature push past the 316 envelope. No brass is offered on the US range.

DBB Standards & Compliance: ASME B16.34, B1.20.1 & NACE MR0175

Crestflo double block-and-bleed valves are built to the ASME B16.34 pressure-temperature standard. NPT threads follow ASME B1.20.1, and materials compliant with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 are available for sour service. Instrument valves qualify under the applicable valve standards, namely ASME B16.34 and API pressure-test/qualification methods. They don't qualify under the compression-fitting standard ASTM F1387. Every double block-and-bleed valve carries heat and lot-number marking, and it ships standard with an EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate; 3.2 certification is available on request. Each block's seat integrity gets checked through the bleed port, alongside seat and shell leak testing, hydraulic proof and burst, and pneumatic testing. Positive material identification (PMI) confirms the alloy grade. In-house NDT backs up the build. Destructive testing happens at ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratories, and third-party inspection can be arranged on request. That bleed-port check, the one that defines DBB function in the first place, doubles as the quality check that proves each isolation stage before the valve ships.
