Instrumentation Fitting & Valve Standards and Specifications
Instrumentation fittings, valves and tubing don't answer to just one standard. Material properties fall under ASTM. Dimensions and design follow ASME and API codes. For sour service, NACE and ISO standards take over. Fugitive emissions get their own rulebook, ISO 15848. Cleanliness is spelled out in ASTM G93 and CGA G4.1. Sanitary work follows 3-A and ASME BPE. Regional jobs often call out NORSOK. Swapping parts across brands hinges on an interchange qualification, ASTM F1387 (F1387 for short). And traceability comes down to EN 10204. This hub matches each of those standards to the exact Crestflo product that meets it. Every part ships with an EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate, a heat number stamped on, and a lead time of 6-8 weeks.
Instrumentation (small-bore) fittings, valves, and tubing are what "standards" covers here: the published material specs, dimensional and testing requirements, and traceability rules that govern them. Large-bore process-piping construction codes fall outside that scope, as do general piping standards. So do the plumbing and hydraulic fitting standards used on power-hydraulic lines, including SAE, JIC hose, and hydraulic DIN 2353. You'll find each standard treated in depth on its own child page, linked below.

Material standards (ASTM) for stainless steel tubing, bar & forgings
Crestflo builds instrumentation components to the ASTM product-form specs below and records the grade on the material test certificate. The material specification sets the alloy chemistry, mechanical properties, product form and testing for the metal a part is made from. These stainless steel fitting standards, along with the matching instrument tubing specification, are what a spec sheet cites.
| Standard | Product form | Typical grades | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A269 | Seamless & welded austenitic tubing | 304/304L, 316/316L | ASTM A269 · tubing |
| ASTM A213 | Seamless ferritic/austenitic tube | 304, 316, 321, 347 | ASTM A213 |
| ASTM A479 / A276 | Stainless bar & shapes | 304/304L, 316/316L, 904L, duplex | A479 · A276 |
| ASTM A182 | Forgings, flanges, forged fittings | F304, F316, F51, F53 | ASTM A182 |
| ASTM A789 / A790 | Duplex & super-duplex tube / pipe | 2205, 2507, 254 SMO | A789 · A790 |
Crestflo covers each grade on the materials hub, from 316 / 316L and 904L to Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex 2507, and the spec you need comes down to two things: the product form your design calls for, and which alloy grade you've picked. Every grade is supplied only as an instrumentation form: fitting, valve or tubing. Bar, sheet and mill product aren't part of the offering.
Dimensional & design standards (ASME/API) for valves, threads & fittings
Dimensional and design standards fix pressure-temperature ratings, thread geometry and fitting envelopes. For valves, the governing basis is ASME B16.34 and the applicable API valve standards. The compression-fitting standard doesn't apply here; that one covers tube fittings only.
| Standard | Governs | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| ASME B16.34 | Valve pressure-temperature ratings; double-block-and-bleed design | Instrumentation valves, DBB |
| ASME B16.11 | Forged socket-weld & threaded fitting dimensions | Socket-weld / threaded fittings |
| ASME B1.20.1 | NPT pipe-thread dimensions & gauging | NPT end connections |
| ASME B31.3 | Process-piping design (instrumentation tie-in context) | Small-bore tie-ins |
| ISO 8434-2 · DIN 2353 | 37° flare geometry · bite-type (metric) fitting basis | Flare fittings · DIN 2353 fittings |
| API 598 · 607 · 6FA · 6D · 602 | Valve inspection, testing & fire-safe qualification | Ball, check & compact valves |
Crestflo builds its 37° flare fittings to ISO 8434-2 and also offers bite-type fittings on the DIN 2353 basis. Valve pressure-temperature ratings follow ASME B16.34, and DBB is rated per B16.34 as well. Flange standards like ASME B16.5 and B16.47 sit nearby but fall outside instrumentation scope: small-bore fittings connect by compression, socket-weld, NPT or flare, not flanged joints. Ratings follow whichever standard applies and can be tailored to what's needed.
Sour-service, emissions & regional standards (NACE, ISO, NORSOK)
For H₂S, offshore and North Sea service, material and qualification standards stack on top of the base specification. Crestflo supplies fittings, valves and manifolds to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 requirements where sour service is called for, in the appropriate alloys.
| Standard | Purpose | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 | Materials for H₂S-containing oil & gas production | MR0175 · ISO 15156 |
| NACE MR0103 | Materials for sour refinery / process service | NACE MR0103 |
| ISO 15848 | Qualification & measurement of valve fugitive emissions | ISO 15848 |
| NORSOK M-630 / M-650 | Material data sheets & manufacturer qualification (Norwegian sector) | M-630 · M-650 |
Where a project calls out a fugitive-emissions class per ISO 15848 or a NORSOK material data sheet, put the target on your RFQ and the Crestflo Engineering Team will confirm the qualified configuration. Check the sour-service selection guide, along with the oil & gas and offshore industry pages.
Cleanliness & sanitary standards (ASTM G93, CGA G4.1, 3-A, ASME BPE)
Oxygen, ultra-high-purity, and hygienic service each come with their own cleanliness or surface standard. These targets are customer-specifiable, so name the class you need on the RFQ.
| Standard | Governs | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM G93 · CGA G4.1 | Cleaning for oxygen & oxygen-enriched service | ASTM G93 · CGA G4.1 |
| ASME BPE | Bioprocessing-equipment surface finish & design | ASME BPE |
| 3-A Sanitary | Sanitary design for food, dairy & beverage equipment | 3-A Sanitary |
Oxygen-service cleaning follows ASTM G93 and CGA G4.1; hygienic and ultra-high-purity surfaces get specified against ASME BPE and 3-A targets. Check the oxygen & UHP cleaning page, along with the semiconductor and pharmaceutical & biotech industry pages.
Interchange & traceability standards (ASTM F1387, EN 10204)
Two standards let a QA reviewer accept a Crestflo part in place of a spec'd line: interchange qualification, which proves the fitting performs, and the traceability document, which proves what it's made of.
| Standard | What it establishes | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM F1387 | Performance qualification of mechanically attached (compression) tube fittings, the basis for dimensional interchange | ASTM F1387 · cross-reference |
| EN 10204 | Inspection-document types: 3.1 MTC standard, 3.2 on request, with heat/lot number on every part | EN 10204 MTC · traceability |
Crestflo compression tube fittings are performance-qualified per ASTM F1387, the mechanically-attached-fitting standard used to confirm drop-in interchange with major brands. Every part ships with an EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate, commonly known as the mill test certificate or MTC (3.2 available on request), along with a heat/lot number stamped right on the part. Need a brand-specific match? Ask the engineering team for a Swagelok® / Parker® cross-reference.

Frequently asked questions
What standards apply to instrumentation tube fittings?
Material specifications (ASTM A269 / A479), thread and dimensional standards (ASME B1.20.1 for NPT, ISO 8434-2 for 37° flare), sour-service standards (NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 where required), an interchange qualification (ASTM F1387), and a traceability standard (EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2) all come into play. Crestflo meets every one of these and puts the result on the material test certificate.
What is the ASME standard for pipe fittings?
Crestflo works to three ASME standards: B16.11 for forged socket-weld and threaded fittings, ASME B1.20.1 for NPT pipe threads, and ASME B16.34 for valve pressure-temperature ratings. Full details live on the ASME B16.11, B1.20.1 and B16.34 pages.
What is an instrumentation fitting?
A small-bore, high-integrity connector, typically a single- or double-ferrule compression tube fitting, used on instrument, sampling and analyzer lines. It differs from large-bore process piping, and that's exactly why instrumentation has its own material, dimensional and interchange standards.
Does Crestflo provide material test certificates?
Yes. Every part ships with an EN 10204 type 3.1 material test certificate as standard, 3.2 on request, with the heat/lot number marked on the part. See EN 10204 MTC and traceability.
Are Crestflo fittings NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant for sour service?
Yes, where specified. Compression fittings, valves and manifolds come supplied to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 requirements in the appropriate alloys. Name the sour-service class on your RFQ, and the engineering team will confirm the qualified configuration.
What certifications does Crestflo hold?
Crestflo holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and PED certification, and it qualifies its compression tube fittings to ASTM F1387. You'll find the certificates in the quality section.
How does Crestflo qualify drop-in / interchange fittings?
Compression tube fittings are performance-qualified per ASTM F1387, the standard covering mechanically attached fittings and used to substantiate dimensional interchange. Valves are a different matter. They're qualified to ASME B16.34 and the applicable API standards, not F1387, since that standard applies to fittings only. Request your cross-reference for a brand-specific match.
How do I identify a fitting size?
Instrumentation fittings are sized by tube outside diameter (OD), in imperial or metric, not by pipe NPS. Crestflo supplies both up to 2" (50 mm) OD. See the tube-fitting size chart.
What are common specifying mistakes?
Calling out the wrong material spec for the media, mixing incompatible thread standards, picking an alloy that fails NACE for sour service, accepting parts with no heat-number traceability: these mistakes happen. The standards mapped on this hub prevent each one, including PED cases.
Which standard covers oxygen or UHP cleanliness?
ASTM G93 and CGA G4.1 govern cleaning for oxygen service, while ASME BPE and 3-A cover sanitary and bioprocess surfaces. Specify the target on your RFQ; see oxygen & UHP cleaning.
Are the parts made in the USA?
Crestflo makes its products in India but serves the US market, with US/European melt available on request and full material traceability. The standard product line is India-origin. Where domestic melt or TAA positioning is needed, that's offered as a capability, see US-origin & TAA.
