What "37° JIC" Means: JIC vs AN vs SAE J514 Flare Fittings

JIC stands for Joint Industry Council, the body that standardized the 37° flare that now carries the SAE J514 and ISO 8434-2 designations. The seal is metal-to-metal: the 37° cone machined on the tube nose is drawn against the fitting's 37° seat by a UNF straight-thread nut, so the thread provides the clamping force while the flare face makes the seal. Dimensionally the 37° JIC flare shares its seat angle with the military AN (Army-Navy) flare and with SAE J514, which is why the three families interchange on the standard geometry. An AN fitting is the same 37° JIC entity carried under the Army-Navy designation, so AN fittings and JIC fittings mate on the shared 37° geometry. Because they share neither the sealing surface nor the thread, a JIC flare nut will not seal against an ORFS flat-face body. Choose 37° JIC for all-metal medium- and high-pressure lines; ORFS is a flat-face, O-ring-sealed connection used where a soft seal is acceptable.
