Hastelloy C-22 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten (Ni-Cr-Mo-W) corrosion-resistant alloy, designated UNS N06022 and W.Nr. 2.4602. It stands up well to both oxidising and reducing media, and it resists pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Drawings, datasheets and purchase orders often specify the same alloy under several trade names and standard designations. Sometimes it appears hyphen-free, as "Hastelloy C 22." Other times it's described loosely as a nickel-base super alloy, or superalloy. Same metal, different labels. Whether a print calls out "Alloy 22," "N06022 alloy" or "NiCr21Mo14W," each one points back to this single Ni-Cr-Mo-W corrosion-resistant grade.

UNS N06022, the US designation, and W.Nr. 2.4602, its European counterpart, describe the same alloy. A part specified under either name is the identical Hastelloy C-22. VDM® and Nicrofer® belong to their respective trademark holders; they appear here only to identify equivalent Ni-Cr-Mo-W grades.

Hastelloy C-22 Chemical Composition (Ni-Cr-Mo-W, per ASTM)

C-22 owes its corrosion performance to a nickel matrix built around high chromium, roughly 22%, paired with about 13% molybdenum and 3% tungsten. Carbon and silicon are kept low too, which protects corrosion resistance in welds and the areas right next to them. That chromium content is what sets C-22 apart from C-276, and it's the main reason the alloy holds up so well against oxidising media.

This nominal analysis lines up with the published Hastelloy C-22 data sheet (or spec sheet) chemistry. Ranges follow whatever ASTM product-form specification applies. Mechanical minimums come from ASTM B574 / B575 / B622, for the solution-annealed condition. Elastic modulus and coefficient of thermal expansion are nominal published values per the applicable standard. They're adjustable to requirement. Final certified properties for a given heat, though, show up on the material test certificate.

Hastelloy C-22 PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number)

Work from nominal composition and C-22's pitting resistance equivalent number comes out to roughly 65, using PREN = Cr + 3.3 × Mo (22 + 3.3 × 13). Add the tungsten term (Cr + 3.3 × (Mo + 0.5 × W)) and that climbs to about 70, well past what you'd see in 6-molybdenum austenitics or super-duplex stainless steels. Higher chromium content gives C-22 the edge over C-276 in PREN. Still, PREN is only a calculated ranking index. Hastelloy C-22 Corrosion Resistance by Media

Few alloys hold up against both oxidising and reducing media the way C-22 does. It also resists pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress-corrosion cracking, the very failure modes that limit stainless steel. Hastelloy C-22 for Sour Service (NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156)

UNS N06022, in the solution-annealed condition, is accepted as a nickel-base corrosion-resistant alloy for sour (H₂S-containing) service under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3. Don't skip the hardness and material-condition limits in the standard; confirm them against your specific application. Hastelloy C-22 Temperature & Pressure Suitability

As an alloy, C-22 holds up from cryogenic temperatures up to roughly 1000 °F (538 °C) in sustained corrosion service, keeping its toughness and strength throughout. The pressure rating of a finished part works differently, though: it comes down to the product form and wall thickness, not the grade itself. Hastelloy C-22 Weldability, Machinability & Fabrication

C-22 is a single-phase Ni-Cr-Mo-W alloy, and welders can join it readily with GTAW or GMAW using a matching filler (AWS ERNiCrMo-10 / W86022). Post-weld heat treatment isn't normally needed for corrosion service. That's because its low carbon and silicon limits keep the weld and heat-affected zone from sensitisation.

Machinability falls in line with other solid-solution nickel alloys. The grade work-hardens, so machinists rely on sharp tooling, positive feeds, rigid setups and speeds slower than what stainless allows. Crestflo forms and machines the alloy in-house. When to Choose Hastelloy C-22 vs C-276, Inconel 625 & 316L

C-22 earns its place when conditions turn strongly oxidising, mixed-acid, or chloride-heavy and prone to upsets. In those cases, it brings chromium that C-276 simply doesn't have. C-22 vs C-276 in one line: Chromium sets C-22 apart, roughly 22% against 16%, and that difference sharpens its resistance to oxidising media and pitting. What is Hastelloy C-22?

Is Hastelloy a stainless steel?

No. Hastelloy C-22 is a nickel-based alloy; nickel serves as the balance element, not iron, so it isn't an iron-based stainless steel. It carries far higher levels of nickel, chromium and molybdenum, and that's precisely why it outperforms stainless grades such as 316 in aggressive chloride and acid service.

What are the key differences between Hastelloy C-22 and C-276?

C-22 contains more chromium, roughly 22% against 16%, which gives it an edge against oxidising media and pitting. C-276 carries more molybdenum instead, about 16% versus 13%, and that's what lets it hold up in hot reducing acids like hydrochloric and sulfuric.
