How an Instrumentation Relief Valve Works: Cracking Pressure, Proportional Relief & Reseat
A spring-loaded poppet keeps the seat shut until upstream pressure hits the cracking pressure, the moment the poppet first lifts off its seat. Past that point, a proportional relief valve opens by degrees: flow climbs as pressure climbs, bleeding the excess off to a vent or downstream line, and the poppet settles back onto its seat once pressure drops below the set point. That gradual response is what sets an instrument-scope relief valve apart from a pop-action ASME code safety valve, which snaps fully open in one go.
Set pressure comes from the spring, and you can get it two ways: adjustable, where it's field-settable within a spring range, or factory-fixed to a specified cracking pressure. Sensing relies on a poppet for general instrument service. Where a defined effective area and a clean reseat matter, bellows are the better choice. Adjustable vs Fixed Relief Valve Set Pressure
Adjustable set-pressure valves give the field or panel shop room to tune the cracking pressure within the installed spring range. What are the two main types of relief valve?
