A flushing ring is a diaphragm-seal accessory for pressure gauges, transmitters and switches, used for instrumentation calibration. Some call it a calibration ring or a drip ring. It has nothing to do with an electrical "flushing ring" or slip ring, and it's not a plumbing or toilet flush ring either. Reviewed by the Crestflo Engineering Team.

What a Flushing Ring Is (Diaphragm Seal Calibration Ring)

A flushing ring is a machined, annular spacer. It sits between the lower housing of a diaphragm seal and the process connection, carrying one or more threaded side ports that open into the sealed cavity behind the diaphragm. Through those ports, an operator can reach the wetted side of the seal directly, without unbolting the assembly from the line. The purpose is simple: keep a diaphragm-seal-protected instrument accurate on dirty, viscous, slurry or crystallizing media. Fluid can be injected through the ring to flush sediment and build-up off the diaphragm. The cavity can be drained or vented as needed, and a reference gauge can be connected right there to calibrate or re-zero the instrument in place.

The seal and the instrument never leave their mounts, so maintenance doesn't call for breaking the process line or pulling the assembly. What the flushing ring does is turn a diaphragm seal into a device that can be serviced, cleaned, and calibrated right where it sits. It doesn't cut into the pressure boundary at all. All it does is space the seal off the flange and carry the flush path across the diaphragm face.

Instrumentation and datasheet documents refer to this same part under several names, and you'll see it quoted under any of them. Sometimes it's called a calibration ring, sometimes a drip ring, sometimes a flush ring (or, reversed, a ring flush), a flushing connection, a seal flush ring, a flushing ring assembly, a diaphragm seal flushing ring, or a flush ring for diaphragm seal. When it's fitted to a gauge, buyers often order it as a gauge flushing ring or a combined flushing / drip / calibration ring. People also call it a seal ring or process seal ring, though that's a bit loose. The flushing ring is really a ported spacer that routes the flush path. It's distinct from the sealing gasket, which is what actually seals the flange joint.

No UNS, Werkstoff or trade-name designation exists for the ring itself. It's an assembly accessory, not a material. So any alloy number, UNS S31603 for 316L being one example, belongs to whatever material the ring is machined from. A flushing ring and a bleed ring get used interchangeably at times, but they aren't really the same thing. A flushing ring is fitted mainly to flush, drain, vent and calibrate the diaphragm-seal cavity. A bleed ring, by contrast, is a spacer whose job is mostly to vent or drain trapped fluid at a flanged joint. Neither should be confused with the diaphragm seal itself, the pressure-isolating element that the ring exists to serve.

How a Flushing Ring Works: Flush Path, Drain, Vent & In-Line Calibration

The ring relies purely on geometry, no powered element at all, to open a serviceable path to the seal cavity.

On a single-port ring, one connection serves for drain, vent or a test gauge; on a dual-port (opposed / two-port) ring, two connections allow a continuous through-flush of the whole cavity, fluid enters one side and carries debris out the other. Each port carries a threaded plug as standard, or an isolating bleed valve or needle valve where the flush or calibration connection needs to be opened and closed under pressure.

A flushing port is a threaded side connection machined into the ring, reaching through to the diaphragm-seal cavity. It's the access point: flush the cavity through it, drain it, vent it, or hook up a test gauge. Port count and thread type get specified according to the service.

Thread dimensions follow the published NPT standard. They're fully customizable to requirement. When the assembly needs flushing or calibration without breaking a plugged connection, add a valve on the flush port, drawn from the instrumentation valves range.

Flushing Ring Materials: 316L Stainless, Hastelloy, Monel & CRA Alloys

316/316L stainless serves as the standard flushing-ring material, used wherever the flush medium and process suit austenitic stainless. But flushing rings often get specified precisely because the media involved are aggressive: acidic, chloride-laden, sour, or running hot. In those cases, the ring gets machined from a corrosion-resistant or high-nickel alloy instead, one that matches the diaphragm seal and other process wetted parts. Each grade has its own material page covering it in depth. The ring itself comes only as an instrumentation form, not as bar, plate, or mill product.

Rings ship solid-machined from the chosen alloy, so the wetted surface is that alloy itself, not a coating over something else. PTFE-lined, PVDF-lined, and other lined-construction flushing rings work differently: a fluoropolymer liner, rather than a machined alloy, provides the wetted barrier. Those fall outside this machined-alloy scope entirely and are quoted on request.

Where Flushing Rings Are Used: Gauges, Transmitters & Switches on Difficult Media

Flushing rings attach to diaphragm-seal assemblies that protect pressure gauges, pressure transmitters and pressure switches whenever the process fluid would clog, coat, crystallize on or corrode a bare instrument. A diaphragm seal keeps the instrument away from that media, using a flexible diaphragm and fill fluid. The flushing ring adds something the seal alone doesn't have: serviceable access, so the seal can be cleaned and the instrument calibrated without pulling anything apart. That's why the two are commonly ordered together, as part of a gauge accessory hook-up. Typical duties include:

Slurry, viscous and crystallizing media. Solids build up on the diaphragm here, so periodic flushing keeps the reading true.

  • Corrosive and sour service, aggressive fluids in an alloy ring matched to the seal wetted parts.
  • Sanitary and clogging process lines: these cover food, beverage and pharmaceutical duties, where the cavity has to be cleaned in place.

What is the purpose of a flushing ring?

It lets you flush, drain, vent or calibrate the wetted side of a diaphragm seal right where it sits, clearing out sediment, slurry or crystallized media and re-zeroing the instrument, without pulling the seal or shutting down the line. A bleed ring, by contrast, is there to vent or drain trapped fluid at the flange itself. In practice, though, the two terms get used loosely and often overlap. When you send out an RFQ, state the function you actually need rather than relying on the name alone.

What materials are flushing rings available in?

316/316L stainless comes standard. Beyond that, a full range of high-nickel and corrosion-resistant alloys is available: Hastelloy C-276 or C-22, Monel 400 or K500, Inconel 625 or 825 (also called Incoloy 825), 254 SMO, Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507, Alloy 20, and Titanium Gr2. No brass. The alloy chosen must match the diaphragm seal and the process-wetted parts.

Are flushing rings available for sour (H2S) service?

Yes. We only use alloys that meet NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-compliance, selected specifically for your service conditions. Each part ships with its own heat/lot number and material test certificate, no exceptions.

Single or dual flush ports, which do I need?

One port is enough for a basic drain, vent, or test-gauge connection. Need a continuous flush of the whole cavity, though? Dual opposed ports handle that: fluid enters one side and pushes debris out the other. Just specify the port count and thread on your RFQ.

How do I specify the right flange size and rating?

Pick the ring to match your process flange's class and size. That's usually ASME B16.5 Class 150, 300, or 600 in 1", 4" / DN25, DN100, though values follow the applicable standard and can be adjusted to requirement. The ring is machined to fit your flange's drilling and bolt pattern.

Do you provide material certificates for flushing rings?
