What a Pressure Gauge Syphon Is (Gauge Siphon, Syphon Pipe & Instrument Gauge Protector)

A pressure gauge syphon is a small pipe loop plumbed into the connection between a process tap and a gauge. Its purpose is to hold a permanent liquid seal: hot steam or vapor rising from the process condenses in the loop, and the cooled column of condensate, rather than live steam, transmits pressure up to the instrument. Because the gauge never sees full process temperature, its bourdon tube and internals are protected and its calibration holds over a longer service life. The same standing liquid column also cushions the gauge against rapid pressure pulsation, so the pointer reads a steadier value and the movement wears more slowly.

The device is entirely mechanical. It relies on condensation, gravity and a trapped liquid column, with no electronics and no moving parts. To work, a syphon is mounted so its loop stays filled with liquid; at commissioning the loop is primed with water or condensate so the seal is present from first pressurization. This is why the gauge syphon is often described simply as a gauge protector or a pressure gauge cooling coil, it is the simplest cool leg between a hot, pulsating process and a delicate instrument.

A syphon holds a liquid seal to defeat heat and pulsation; it is not the same as a porous-element snubber, which damps spikes through a restrictor, nor a piston-type gauge saver, which isolates a gauge on over-range. Those neighboring accessories solve different problems and are compared below.

Process and instrumentation documents specify this component under many names, and the same part is quoted under any of them. It is variously called a pressure gauge siphon, gauge syphon, gauge siphon, a syphon for pressure gauge, an instrument syphon or gauge protector, a syphon pipe, syphon tube, syphon fitting or gauge syphon pipe. By geometry it is a pigtail syphon (also a pigtail siphon, pigtail tube, pigtail-type syphon, or circular / 270° syphon) or a coil syphon (coil-type syphon, or pressure gauge cooling coil); an angled form is called a 90° syphon, U-type syphon or angle syphon. By application it is a steam syphon, steam gauge syphon or boiler pressure gauge syphon, and by material a stainless steel syphon or carbon steel syphon. No UNS, Werkstoff or trade-name designation exists for this formed assembly, it is not an alloy but a fabricated pipe loop, governed by the pipe specification of its material and the thread standard of its ends; grade selection routes to the materials library.

How a Gauge Syphon Works: Cooling, Liquid Seal & Pulsation Damping

The working principle is a short sequence, all driven by condensation and gravity rather than any powered element:

Mounting orientation matters: the syphon is installed so the loop remains filled and the gauge sits above the seal. On a steam service the loop is left to fill naturally with condensate; on other hot services it is primed at start-up. A common hook-up runs from the process tap, through a gauge root / isolation valve, through the syphon, to the gauge, giving isolation for service plus the cool, damped seal for protection.

A pigtail syphon is a syphon, "pigtail" simply names the coiled/circular geometry, so a pigtail and a coil are two forms of the same cool-leg device rather than different products. Both are offered in stainless steel and carbon steel across the standard schedule range.

Pressure Gauge Syphon Materials: 316/316L, 304/304L Stainless & Carbon Steel

Stainless steel and carbon steel are the two standard materials for gauge syphons. Stainless steel, 304/304L or 316/316L, is the default for corrosive service, cleaner steam, or where the syphon should match the impulse-line tubing; carbon steel is an economical choice for non-corrosive steam duty. For sour, chloride-laden or otherwise aggressive service, the syphon is formed from a corrosion-resistant or high-nickel alloy instead. Where Pressure Gauge Syphons Are Used: Steam, Boilers & Steam Tracing

Gauge syphons sit ahead of pressure gauges, switches and transmitters wherever the process is steam or a hot condensable vapor that would otherwise overheat the instrument. Common service includes:
