Pneumatic Check Valve: Instrument-Grade Non-Return Valve for Air & Gas Service
A pneumatic check valve is a one-way, non-return device. It lets compressed air or gas move in a single direction and blocks any reverse flow on its own, using a spring-loaded ball or poppet pressed against a seat. No electrical power, no manual actuation needed. Crestflo builds instrument-grade pneumatic check valves in 316/316L stainless and high-nickel alloys, sized from 1/16" to 1". They come with tube-fitting (compression) or NPT ends, and cracking pressures are spring-set and selectable. These are built for instrument-air, gas, and sampling service, and Crestflo delivers them in 6-8 weeks.
This valve is a metal non-return valve built to instrumentation-grade standards, meant for instrument-air and gas service. It isn't a plastic or brass air-compressor tank valve. It isn't a pilot-operated cylinder check valve, either. And it isn't a plumbing backflow preventer.
Also Known As: Pneumatic Non-Return Valve (NRV), Air Check Valve & One-Way Air Valve
Crestflo lists this component under the "check / NRV" valve family, though pneumatic schematics and instrument datasheets specify it by several different names. A pneumatic check valve also goes by pneumatic non-return valve (pneumatic NRV), air check valve, instrument-air or compressed-air check valve, and gas check valve. You'll also see it called a one-way air valve, a spring check valve, and an anti-backflow or backflow-prevention air valve. By internal design, it's a poppet check valve or a ball check valve. For the broad type covering all services, see the general check valve options. If you specify by the exact abbreviation, our non-return valve (NRV) page is the full-name twin.
How a Pneumatic Check Valve Works: One-Way Air Flow & Backflow Prevention
Forward air or gas pressure lifts the spring-loaded ball or poppet off its seat once line pressure hits the valve's cracking pressure, opening a flow path in the intended direction. When forward pressure drops below that cracking pressure, or the line tries to push back the other way, the internal spring and downstream back-pressure push the sealing element back against the seat, blocking reverse flow. This action is automatic and directional. There's no solenoid, no actuator, no manual input involved. That means the valve has to be installed with the body flow arrow pointing in the direction of intended flow, matching whatever check-valve symbol or diagram appears on the pneumatic schematic. Because a calibrated spring, not gravity, re-seats the sealing element, the spring-check design can be installed in any attitude. It works just as well as a vertical check valve as it does horizontal, and can be mounted in whatever orientation the tube run or panel calls for. This one-way, anti-backflow behavior is what sets a pneumatic check valve (spring check, or non-return valve) apart from a set-pressure device such as a relief valve.
Pneumatic & Gas Service: Instrument-Air, Compressed-Air & Carrier-Gas Applications
This valve's pneumatic version is built for air and gas control loops, the kind of duty that calls for a metal, spec'd, corrosion-resistant one-way valve rather than a commodity brass or plastic compressor check. Typical service runs across instrument-air headers, actuator and pilot supply lines, analytical carrier-gas and purge circuits, sample-conditioning panels, and compressed-air distribution. Here, an instrument-grade metal air check valve pulls ahead on corrosion resistance, published metallurgy, heat-number traceability, and certified spec certainty. Brass and plastic air-compressor valves simply can't document any of that. For the wider application picture, see instrument-air systems and analytical & sampling systems; the same body platform also runs on liquid service under hydraulics.
Pneumatic Check Valve Types: Ball vs Poppet & Spring-Loaded Configurations
Instrumentation pneumatic check valves rely on just a handful of sealing mechanisms. In instrument sizes, ball (ball-and-spring) and poppet (lift) designs dominate; swing checks show up rarely at this scale. Crestflo supplies both ball and poppet spring-check designs.
| Configuration | Sealing element | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poppet check valve | Spring-loaded poppet | Clean instrument-air and gas, pilot/actuator lines | Consistent re-seat, low chatter in gas service |
| Ball check valve | Spring-loaded ball | Compact in-line backflow protection | Simple, robust, tolerant of light particulate |
| Spring check valve | Poppet or ball + calibrated spring | Where a defined opening (cracking) pressure is required | Spring sets the cracking pressure |
All units are in-line (inline) configurations, threading or connecting directly into the air or tube run. Values follow the applicable standard, and they can be customized as required.
Pneumatic Check Valve Cracking Pressure & Spring Options
What defines a pneumatic check valve is its cracking pressure: the minimum forward pressure required to open the valve and start flow. That figure comes from the internal spring, chosen when you place the order. Need minimal opening resistance for low-pressure air? A low cracking pressure valve handles that. Standard and higher spring settings, meanwhile, are built for firmer re-seat and higher-pressure gas service.
Springs come two ways. You can get a fixed cracking-pressure setting matched to your application, or an adjustable spring whose opening point can be trimmed in the field. Either way, the fixed or adjustable check valve fits the same body.
| Setting | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Low cracking pressure (nominal ~1 psi) | Low-pressure instrument air, minimal flow restriction |
| Standard cracking pressure (nominal ~10 psi) | General pneumatic and pilot-line service |
| Higher / adjustable cracking pressure (e.g. ~25 psi) | Firmer re-seat, higher-pressure gas lines |
Typical published spring settings run 1, 10, and 25 psi, though they're selectable and can be customized to whatever the application calls for. Just specify the cracking pressure you need on the RFQ, and we'll match the spring to it.
Pneumatic Check Valve Sizes (1/16"–1") & End Connections: NPT, BSP, Tube
Pneumatic check valves come with tube-fitting (compression) ends for a direct connection into an air or tube run, or with male/female NPT threaded ends, in both imperial fractional and metric sizes from 1/16" to 1". Miniature and micro sizes hold down the small end, built for pilot and impulse air. On the tube-fitting side, you get single- or double-ferrule sets: a double-ferrule check valve gives the standard two-ferrule grip, while a single-ferrule set is available on request. Ferrules can be hardened or non-hardened, depending on what the job needs. These valves pair directly with Crestflo tube fittings, adding inline backflow protection anywhere along the run.
| Imperial size | Metric equivalent | Tube-fitting end | NPT end | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/16" | — | Yes | Yes | Miniature / micro air check valve |
| 1/8" | ~3 mm | Yes | Yes | Small pilot and impulse air lines |
| 1/4" | 6 mm | Yes | Yes | Most-specified instrument-air size |
| 3/8" | 10 mm | Yes | Yes | Higher-flow gas and purge lines |
| 1/2" | 12 mm | Yes | Yes | Process air and utility tubing |
| 3/4" | — | Yes | Yes | Larger air-distribution tubing |
| 1" | — | Yes | Yes | Top of the instrumentation band |
NPT threads are cut to ASME B1.20.1. BSPP, BSPT, and other thread forms are available on request. Tube-fitting-end interchange with the major instrumentation brands is performance-referenced to ASTM F1387; that standard qualifies the compression fitting ends, not the check mechanism itself.
Pneumatic Check Valve Materials: 316 Stainless, Hastelloy, Monel, Inconel & Duplex
Crestflo stainless steel pneumatic check valves go by more than one name: an SS check valve, where SS stands for stainless steel, or a stainless steel non-return valve (NRV). Either way, the line starts with 316/316L for general air and gas service, and the same platform stretches into high-nickel and corrosion-resistant alloys, grades most commodity air-check suppliers simply don't stock, with no brass anywhere on the US line. Machined bodies and trim climb further still, into duplex, super-austenitic, and nickel alloys built for sour gas, chloride exposure, or media that's aggressively corrosive. Each grade page walks through the alloy itself and links out to its instrumentation forms.
| Alloy | UNS | Best-for service |

A low pressure check valve simply needs a spring with a low cracking pressure. A high pressure check valve, though, is another matter, matching the body alloy and the ASME B16.34 pressure class to your actual working pressure becomes essential. Both ends of the range, low and high, air or gas, are handled on one platform. You specify what you need, and the platform covers it.
Pneumatic Check Valve Seat & Seal Materials and Temperature Limits
By default, sealing is soft-seat, and the elastomer you choose sets the working-temperature window. Standard published limits apply, though they can be adjusted to the requirement. PTFE covers broad chemical compatibility. FKM/Viton handles general air, hydrocarbon, and process gas service. Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM/Kalrez) takes on aggressive or high-temperature media. Where an elastomer won't do the job, metal-seat options are available. For oxygen and high-purity gas service, the valve can be supplied cleaned to the applicable standard; see oxygen and UHP cleaning. Just specify the gas media and temperature on the RFQ, and the seat and seal get matched to it.

Pneumatic Check Valve FAQ
What does a pneumatic check valve do?
Crestflo instrument-grade pneumatic check valves let compressed air or gas flow one way and shut out reverse flow automatically. A spring-loaded ball or poppet seats against the valve body to do it, with no electrical power and no manual control needed. These valves come in stainless and high-nickel alloys, built for instrument-air, gas, and sampling service.
What are the main types of pneumatic check valve?
Crestflo covers ball (ball-and-spring) and poppet (lift) checks for instrumentation sizes, and offers both designs to match clean air, gas, or light-particulate service. Swing checks rarely see use at this scale.
Is a pneumatic check valve an air-compressor check valve?
No. Check valves on air-compressor tanks are usually brass or plastic. Crestflo's is different: an instrument-grade metal non-return valve, built in 316L through nickel alloys, made for instrument-air, gas, and sampling service. The metallurgy is published, and every unit carries heat-number traceability. Crestflo doesn't offer brass on the US line.
What is the difference between a backflow preventer and a check valve?
A check valve is one sealing element, and it does one job: stop flow from reversing. A backflow preventer is a different animal entirely, a larger assembly that often combines several checks with vents, built and tested specifically to protect potable water. What we're describing here is an instrumentation pneumatic check valve. It isn't a plumbing backflow preventer.
What cracking pressure is available?
Cracking pressure is the forward pressure needed to open the valve. It's set by the spring, and you pick the value when the order goes in. Settings run low, standard, or higher and adjustable. Published nominal figures include 1, 10, and 25 psi, and these can be tailored to whatever the service demands.
What sizes and end connections do Crestflo pneumatic check valves use?
Tube-fitting (compression) ends or NPT threads come in imperial or metric, from 1/16" to 1", including miniature sizes. NPT is cut to ASME B1.20.1. BSPP/BSPT and other thread forms are available on request, and tube-fitting ends combine directly with Crestflo tube fittings.
Which materials can I get it in?
316/316L serves as the standard grade, and the lineup runs well past that: 304/304L, 904L, Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507, 254 SMO, AL-6XN, Alloy 20, Monel 400/K500, Inconel 625/825, Hastelloy C-276/C-22, and Titanium Gr2 are all available, among others. Brass and plastic aren't offered on the US line.
Are Crestflo pneumatic check valves NACE / sour-gas compliant?
Yes. We supply them compliant with NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156, in alloys suited for sour-gas and H2S-bearing service. Just confirm the alloy grade and hardness limits you need on your RFQ.
What is the pressure and temperature rating?
Working pressure follows the applicable ASME B16.34 pressure class, set by the body alloy, bore, and temperature you select. On soft-seated versions, though, temperature is capped by whichever elastomer's in the seal. Ask for the certified rating on your specific configuration when you submit the RFQ.
What certification and traceability come with it?
Every part carries a heat-number mark, backed by an EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate as standard (3.2 available on request). PMI, in-house NDT, and ISO/IEC 17025 destructive testing support this, along with third-party inspection when requested. The company holds ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001 and PED certification.
Where are Crestflo pneumatic check valves made and how fast can they ship to the US?
Crestflo sources these from India, though US and European melt options are available on request, and every piece comes with full material traceability. As a US-serving manufacturer, Crestflo keeps standard items in stock and ready to ship, while specials are made to order with delivery running 6-8 weeks. TAA and domestic-melt requirements are covered in detail on the US origin & compliance page.
Can I get a sample, small quantity, or private label?
Yes. Small MOQs are available, along with samples and private-label programs for OEMs and distributors. Request a quote or a free sample, and send a print for made-to-order configurations.
