Instrumentation Flow Control Valves

Crestflo makes flow control valves: manually adjustable throttling valves that advance a tapered needle or metering stem into an orifice, letting you set and hold the volumetric flow rate precisely in small-bore instrument, sampling, or gas lines. Sizes run from 1/16" to 1", built in 316/316L stainless as well as high-nickel and corrosion-resistant alloys, with tube-fitting or threaded ends available. Standard items ship from ready stock; specials are made to order, with delivery running six to eight weeks.

On this page, "flow control valve" refers to an instrumentation-grade needle or metering valve, adjusted by hand, used to regulate flow rate in small-bore fluid and gas lines. It doesn't cover hydraulic cartridge valves or pressure-compensated flow control valves. Nor does it include HVAC balancing valves. And it excludes electric or proportional control valves, whether solenoid or servo driven.

This valve goes by many names among specifiers and buyers. Some call it a flow regulating valve, a flow regulator valve, a flow rate control valve, or a flow adjustment valve. Because the mechanism itself is a fine-throttling needle, it also turns up on spec sheets as a needle valve flow control, a flow control needle valve, a needle-type flow control valve, a precision flow control valve or fine metering valve, an adjustable flow control valve, or simply a manual or hand-operated flow control valve. The line-break safety variant carries its own set of terms: excess-flow valve, excess-flow check valve, or flow-limiting valve. When downstream adjustment needs to be highly repeatable, engineers order the metering valve. Where isolation is the priority, the base mechanism is the needle valve.

What a Flow Control Valve Does: Working Principle & Flow Coefficient (Cv)

An instrumentation flow control valve manages flow rate through throttling. Turn the handle, and a tapered needle or graduated metering stem drives into or out of a matched orifice; that shifts the annular flow area and, with it, the flow coefficient (Cv) at any given pressure drop. A vernier or graduated stem lets an operator return to the exact same setting every time, repeatably - that's what separates fine metering from coarse on/off service. An excess-flow valve, sometimes called a flow fuse, is a safety device, not a throttling valve. It shuts when flow exceeds a set limit, say on a line break, then resets once the line's restored. If sustained fine adjustment is the main job, the dedicated metering valve is the right product.

Flow Control Valve Materials: 316L Stainless, Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy & Duplex

Standard body and stem construction uses bar-stock 316/316L stainless steel. On request, we also offer a full range of corrosion-resistant and high-nickel alloys. Alloy compositions and mechanical properties follow the applicable ASTM material standard, and they're customizable to whatever the job calls for.

Crestflo doesn't offer brass on the US range. Stainless and alloy instrumentation valves are the only options supplied. Finishes include material finish, electropolish, passivation, and silver anti-galling plating. When an oxygen-service option is specified, oxygen-clean preparation is done per ASTM G93. Flow Control Valve Pressure & Temperature Ratings

Pressure-temperature ratings follow ASME B16.34 valve methodology. Body alloy, size, and service temperature all govern the number, and the certified rating for a given series gets confirmed on the quotation. High-pressure flow control valve variants exist for elevated service pressures, wherever the alloy and orifice allow it, and again the certified rating for the chosen series is confirmed on the quotation. What sets the temperature capability is the stem-packing selection. Standard PTFE packing handles service to roughly 450°F (232°C). Graphite (Grafoil) packing pushes past that, with limits set by the applicable seal standard and room to customize as required. Ordering a Flow Control Valve: Specification & Cv Guide

Each valve gets built to a specification string covering series, size and end type per port, thread standard, body alloy, packing, handle style, and orifice/Cv. Because orifice sizes, Cv values, and the part-number series depend on the model and the service, request the ordering-code and Cv guide from our engineering team instead of assuming a figure. Flow Control Valve Applications: Instrument Air, Sampling, Gas & Hydraulic Lines

These valves manage flow in small-bore instrument and analytical service: instrument air and gas-panel lines, analytical and sampling systems, instrument hydraulic takeoffs, sour and offshore service, and high-purity semiconductor gas lines. On small-bore runs, they handle instrument air, inert and process gases, fluids, and sample water. In pneumatic actuator and cylinder circuits, a needle-type pneumatic flow control valve meters the supply or exhaust air to set actuator speed. That gives repeatable speed control on the instrument-air side, with no separate metering block needed. They aren't built for power-hydraulic cartridge duty, HVAC balancing, municipal water mains, or electric/proportional control (solenoid or servo). Other valve classes cover those jobs.

Flow control valves are rated to ASME B16.34 and qualify to the applicable API valve standards (API 598 seat/shell testing; API 602 where applicable). Sour-service material options conform to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. Every valve is testable by hydraulic proof, seat and shell leak test, pneumatic test, and positive material identification (PMI), with in-house NDT, destructive testing at ISO/IEC 17025-accredited labs, and third-party inspection on request. What does a flow control valve do?

The valve throttles to control volumetric flow rate. A tapered needle, or metering stem, advances into an orifice, setting a precise flow and holding it there. That flow doesn't waver across the valve's range, regardless of small changes in downstream demand.

What is another name for a flow control valve?

Common alternatives include flow regulating valve, flow regulator valve, and flow rate control valve. When people need fine, repeatable adjustment, they usually call it a metering valve or needle-type throttling valve. Crestflo's dedicated fine-adjust product is the metering valve.

What is the difference between a pressure control valve and a flow control valve?

What are common problems with flow control valves?
