A quick exhaust valve, or QEV, is a three-port pneumatic valve that vents a cylinder's air straight to atmosphere rather than sending it back through the directional control valve. That's what lets the cylinder stroke faster. A quick exhaust valve carries several other names depending on who's writing the spec. Some call it a QEV or QEV valve, others a pneumatic quick exhaust valve (or "quick exhaust valve pneumatic"). You'll also see quick release valve, quick-dump valve, rapid exhaust valve, fast exhaust valve, quick air-exhaust, and quick vent valve. Mechanism gives it another set of labels: diaphragm, poppet, or shuttle quick exhaust valve. How a Quick Exhaust Valve Works: Diagram, Ports & ISO 1219 Symbol

A QEV is a pressure-differential shuttle device, either diaphragm or poppet, built with three ports. When inlet pressure at port 1 (P) exceeds what's on the cylinder side, the internal shuttle seals off the large exhaust port and sends air through to port 2 (A), which drives the cylinder. Once inlet pressure drops, the trapped air in the cylinder pushes the shuttle the other way. It seals port 1 and dumps straight to atmosphere through the wide-open exhaust port 3 (R). That exhaust path is short and unrestricted, unlike the long route back through the directional valve, so the cylinder vents almost instantly. Actuation speeds up as a result.

Ports carry markings per ISO 11727 / ISO 5599. On schematics, the valve appears as the ISO 1219-1 fluid-power symbol. That's the standard quick exhaust valve symbol used on pneumatic diagrams. Read it alongside the labeled port diagram in the table below, and it maps port 1 (P), port 2 (A), and port 3 (R) to the working principle described above.

Installation note: mount the QEV as close to the cylinder port as you can, ideally screwed straight into it, so the air path to atmosphere stays as short as possible. That closeness is what gives you the speed gain. Thread the inlet (port 1) to the directional-valve line, connect the cylinder port (port 2) to the actuator, and leave exhaust port 3 open, or fit it with a silencer.

What is a quick exhaust valve?

A quick exhaust valve, or QEV, is a three-port pneumatic valve. Instead of sending a cylinder's air back through the directional control valve, it vents that air straight to atmosphere. The cylinder strokes faster as a result. Its ports carry three labels: 1 for inlet, 2 for cylinder, and 3 for exhaust.

How does a quick exhaust valve work?

When inlet pressure at port 1 rises above the cylinder side, an internal shuttle or diaphragm seals off the exhaust and lets air through to port 2. Once inlet pressure falls, cylinder air shoves the shuttle back to seal port 1 instead, and the air dumps out through the large exhaust port 3. What happens if a quick exhaust valve fails?

A failed QEV usually loses its fast-vent path first. The cylinder then exhausts slowly back through the directional valve, and actuation turns sluggish. Or the shuttle leaks between inlet and exhaust instead, which shows up as continuous air bleed. Either way, swap it for a like-for-like unit matched on port, thread, and body alloy.

How do I connect a quick exhaust valve to a cylinder?

Thread port 1, the QEV inlet, into the directional-valve line. Port 2, the cylinder port, screws straight onto the cylinder itself. As for port 3, the exhaust, leave it open or fit it with a silencer.

Is this the same as an automotive "valved exhaust"?

No. QEV here means the pneumatic valve that speeds up air-cylinder motion. Automotive "valved exhaust" and exhaust cut-outs are a separate product, governed by their own regulations, and fall outside what we cover here.

What is the difference between a quick exhaust valve and a speed controller?
