A bellows valve is a packless instrumentation valve: its stem seal comes from a flexible metal bellows, welded in place between the stem and the bonnet, so process media can't work its way past the stem and escape to atmosphere. What Is a Bellows Valve? Packless, Bellows-Sealed Stem Design

A bellows valve, sometimes called a bellows-sealed valve or bellows seal valve, is an on/off isolation or shut-off valve whose stem seal comes from a thin-walled metal bellows instead of compression packing. As the stem strokes, the bellows stretches and compresses like an accordion, keeping the moving stem hermetically enclosed. There's no packing clearance around the stem, so there's no stem-path leak route for fugitive emissions. That's exactly why this class of valve is called packless.

Specifiers and buyers know this design by plenty of other names too: bellows-sealed globe valve, bellows globe valve, bellows sealed stop valve, bellows isolation valve, bellows shut-off valve, metal bellows valve, welded bellows valve, edge-welded bellows valve, packless valve, fugitive-emission valve, zero-leak stem valve, hermetically sealed valve. They all describe the same thing at the core: a stem sealed by a welded metal bellows.

How a Bellows-Sealed Valve Works: Welded Metal Bellows, Zero Stem Leak

The bellows is a flexible metal element, welded to the stem at one end and to the bonnet at the other. Together these welds form a continuous, leak-tight metal barrier around the stem's full travel. As the handwheel drives the stem down onto the seat, the bellows compresses; when the stem retracts, it extends. The process fluid never leaves the bellows envelope and never touches a sliding seal, so fugitive emission along the stem path simply can't happen. Most instrumentation bellows valves still add a secondary stem seal behind the bellows, a backup packing that serves as a belt-and-suspenders barrier. A rising or non-rising stem, fitted with a metal or soft seat, handles the actual shutoff of flow.

Bellows Valve Construction: Welded (Edge-Welded) vs Formed Metal Bellows

Two bellows designs cover most of this class. Edge-welded (welded) bellows start life as stamped diaphragm plates, welded rim-to-rim into a stack. The payoff is a long stroke, a high cycle life, and a tight envelope, engineers reach for these when the duty involves heavy, repeated cycling. Formed (hydraulically formed) bellows are shaped from thin-wall tube instead. They're tough and cost less, which suits them well to isolation work where the stroke stays short. Multi-ply construction adds another wall (or several) for extra margin against pressure and fatigue. The bellows itself is a sealed cartridge. There's no re-packing it in the field, no repair kit to rebuild it with. Once one wears out, you swap it; you don't service it in place.

Bellows Valve vs Diaphragm Valve vs Packed-Gland Valve

Bellows and diaphragm valves share one trait: both are packless, so there's no leak path along the stem. The bellows valve takes a different approach, sealing a rising, sliding stem with a linear metal bellows. A diaphragm valve, by contrast, seals with a flexing membrane, which makes it well suited to high-purity and sanitary applications. Compare that to a conventional packed-gland valve, which relies on compression packing. That packing wears down over time and can start to weep.

Bellows Valve Pressure & Temperature Ratings

Cold working pressure and temperature ratings hinge on size, body alloy, bellows construction, and seat. Crestflo builds the bellows-valve class to the design provisions of ASME B16.34, with ratings assigned per the applicable standard for the selected material and confirmed to your service conditions. Metal-seated and metal-bellows builds carry the class to high temperatures for steam and thermal service. Soft seats, though, set their own limits: PTFE is typically rated to about 450 °F (232 °C), PCTFE lower, and graphite and metal seats extend higher still. High-pressure and cryogenic/high-temperature variants are available, with values following the applicable standard and customizable to what you need. Flow coefficient (Cv) depends on size, pattern, and seat as well; the certified Cv for your configuration gets confirmed on the RFQ. Body, bonnet, and bellows are specified against the media's corrosion and temperature demands. The stainless default is 316/316L. When chlorides, acids, sour service, or seawater are involved, high-nickel and other corrosion-resistant alloys take over. Fugitive-Emission & Leak Integrity: ISO 15848 Low-E Bellows Seal

The welded bellows makes this valve inherently a low fugitive-emission (low-E) design; there's no stem-path leak route at all. Bellows-sealed valves can be type-tested for fugitive emissions to ISO 15848-1, the industrial-valve standard under the ISO 15848 series, and every valve is also seat- and shell-leak tested. That combination puts the bellows valve at the top of the list for toxic, hazardous, and hydrogen media, where letting anything escape into the atmosphere just isn't acceptable.

Bellows Valve Testing & Inspection

Every bellows valve goes through seat- and shell-leak testing. Depending on the application, the validation regime can include hydraulic proof, burst and impulse, pneumatic, thermal-cycle, and vibration testing. PMI confirms the alloy, in-house NDT checks weld and body integrity, and destructive testing happens at ISO/IEC 17025-accredited labs. Third-party inspection is available on request. Finishes & Cleaning: Electropolish, Passivation & ASTM G93 Oxygen Cleaning

Standard finishes include material finish, passivation, and electropolish. Silver anti-galling plating is available on threaded parts, too. Valves intended for oxygen service can be cleaned to ASTM G93, and high-purity cleaning covers semiconductor and analytical duty as well. Note your surface-finish or cleanliness target on the RFQ.
