Engineers and specifiers ask for this valve by many different names. Most often it's called an instrument plug valve, a quarter-turn plug valve, a non-lubricated plug valve, a soft-seat plug valve, a plug cock, or a quarter-turn shutoff valve. For switching and diverting duty, the same product goes by 2-way plug valve, 3-way plug valve, sampling plug valve, or analytical switching valve. Panel systems know it as a panel-mount plug valve. How a Plug Valve Works: 90° Quarter-Turn Function & the Valve Plug

The plug valve's working principle turns on the plug itself: the rotating flow-control element, a cylindrical or tapered body machined with a through-port. When the port lines up with the flow path, the valve is fully open. A 90° quarter-turn swings the port out of line, closing the valve, or in a 3-way plug, sending flow to a second outlet. The seating surface is a large wraparound contact area between plug and body, and that's what gives the valve reliable bi-directional shutoff, along with quick, repeatable operation from a single quarter-turn of the handle. Non-lubricated soft-seat construction removes the need for injected sealant. That makes the valve well suited to clean instrument, analytical, and sample-handling systems, where controlling contamination matters most.

Plug Valve Types: 2-Way On/Off, 3-Way Switching & Non-Lubricated

Plug Valve Symbol & P&ID Representation

On a plug valve schematic or P&ID diagram, the valve appears as the standard two-triangle body with a plug indicator, a rectangular or bar marker running across the stem.
