You'll also see this valve called an L-port 3-way ball valve, an L-pattern ball valve, an L-flow ball valve, or an L-bore ball valve. By function, it goes by L-port selector valve, L-port diverter valve, L-port switching valve, or directional 3-way ball valve. Drawings often trim it down to plain L-port valve, or just "L port valve." Some write it without the hyphen: "L port ball valve," "L port 3 way valve." Others flip the order entirely: "3 way ball valve L port." It sits within the 3-way (multiport) ball valve family. The T-bore version is the T-port ball valve, while the two-way isolation type is simply the standard ball valve.
What Is an L-Port 3-Way Valve and How Does It Work?
An L-port 3-way valve works by rotating a ball drilled with an L-shaped, right-angle bore across three body ports. Because the bore turns a 90° corner inside the ball, it links the common port to only one side port at any given handle position. A quarter-turn then swings that connection to the other side port. In short, the valve selects or diverts between two lines rather than joining all three at once.
That's the key difference from a T-port. A standard L-port doesn't feed both outlets simultaneously, so it gets used to switch a single stream between line A and line B, to select which of two instruments sees the process, or to route a sample down one of two paths. In this switch-between-two-lines role, the L-port functions as a two-way diverter valve, one common inlet directed to either of two outlets. It's equally specified as a 3-way switching valve on selector and changeover panels.
Ball valves as a category fall into four families: by construction, floating and trunnion-mounted; by port count, two-way and multiport, which includes 3-way L-port and T-port designs. L-Port Ball Valve Flow Paths & Handle Positions
The L-bore geometry decides which ports are open at each handle position. On the standard two-position L-port arrangement, the common port connects to one side port at 0° and to the other after a 90° turn. An optional detented off position that blocks all ports can be supplied if required, since the exact shut-off behavior depends on how the ball's ports are machined. L-Port vs T-Port Ball Valve: Which Bore Pattern to Choose
Bore pattern comes first when you're choosing. An L-port connects the common port to one of two side ports at a time, that's switch or select. A T-port connects the common port to one or both side ports at once, so it can divert, distribute, or mix. Pick an L-port when you need to switch a stream between two lines or choose between two instruments. Pick a T-port to combine or split flow, or to feed both outlets simultaneously. These two aren't interchangeable in a circuit. Decide by flow function first, and only then think about size and material.

A full-port build, sometimes called full-bore, keeps the bore the same size as the line for the least restriction possible. A standard-port build trades a bit of that flow for a more compact body. Panel-mount, low-profile, forged-body and bar-stock configurations are all available for panel and enclosure work.
L-Port Ball Valve Pressure Rating & Cold Working Pressure (CWP)
L-port ball valves carry a pressure rating expressed as cold working pressure, or CWP, and it shifts with size, bore, seat material and alloy. Small-bore bar-stock instrumentation ball valves often go up to 6,000 psi (413 bar) CWP for switching duty, while 3,000 psi designs cover general service; the actual figures follow the applicable standard and can be tailored to what's needed. L-Port Ball Valve Seat Materials & Temperature Limits: PTFE, RPTFE & PEEK
The seat material determines how much temperature and media the valve can handle. Below are the standard published service limits for common instrument seat and seal materials. L-Port Ball Valve Materials: 316 Stainless, Duplex, 6-Moly, Monel, Inconel & Hastelloy
The stainless steel L-port ball valve serves as the default build. Crestflo machines this SS L-port ball valve, essentially a stainless 3-way ball valve, from bar stock and forgings in stainless steel and corrosion-resistant alloys; brass isn't offered anywhere on this US instrumentation range. Bodies, balls and stems get cut from ASTM A276 / A479 bar stock. Standard bodies come in 316/316L stainless and 304/304L. Higher-alloy options handle chloride, sour and high-temperature service. L-Port Ball Valve Actuation & Configuration: Manual, Panel-Mount & Pneumatic
