A poppet (inline) check valve holds a spring-loaded poppet against a seat, which gives tight, repeatable cracking pressure and suits low-flow instrument service. A ball check valve simply seats a ball, and that's enough for backflow prevention on dosing and sample lines. A piston check valve relies on a guided piston, built for higher pressure and higher-cycle duty.
