NPT and NPTF are both 60° tapered pipe threads, sharing the same thread form, the same 1:16 taper, and the same pitch. That means they'll thread together without trouble. The difference shows up in how each one seals. NPTF, known as Dryseal, is machined so the crests and roots of the threads interfere with each other, creating a metal-to-metal seal with no tape required. Standard NPT can't do that on its own; it depends on a sealant, PTFE tape or pipe dope, to close off the spiral leak path left between mating threads.

On this page, NPT and NPTF refer to fluid-system tapered pipe threads used on instrumentation and industrial connections (per ASME B1.20.1 and ASME B1.20.3). They aren't electrical-conduit thread, and they don't match the loose automotive sense of "pipe thread" either.

NPT vs NPTF: the Short Answer for Engineers and Buyers

NPT and NPTF don't differ in size or thread form. Those are identical. What sets them apart is how much each thread is allowed to be cut at the crest and root, and that's what determines how each one seals:

NPT (National Pipe Taper) is a general-purpose tapered pipe thread built to ASME/ANSI B1.20.1. The gap between crest and root leaves a small spiral leak path, so you need a sealant, PTFE tape or pipe dope, to get a reliable joint.

NPTF (National Pipe Taper Fuel, or "Dryseal"), by contrast, follows ASME/ANSI B1.20.3 and uses controlled crest and root truncation. When you tighten it, the crests and roots crush together and seal metal-to-metal. No tape needed; the dry seal is built into the design.

An NPT part and an NPTF part share the same form, taper, and pitch, so they'll go together without a fight. Physical assembly isn't the whole story, though. A guaranteed dryseal only happens NPTF-to-NPTF. Mix the two, and you're really working with a standard NPT joint, so treat it that way: make it up with sealant.

NPT and NPTF show up on drawings, spec sheets, and purchase orders under a handful of different names. Buyers tend to search the long forms and the male/female abbreviations rather than the short codes.

  • NPT, National Pipe Taper; American National Standard Taper Pipe Thread; "National Pipe Thread"; National Pipe Taper thread. Male form is MNPT (male NPT); female form is FNPT (female NPT).
  • NPTF, National Pipe Taper Fuel; Dryseal American National Standard Taper Pipe Thread; "Dryseal," "dry seal thread," or "dryseal pipe thread." Male form is MNPTF; female form is FNPTF. Related internal (female) dryseal forms include NPSF (straight) and NPTF internal.
  • The "F" in NPTF stands for Fuel, the standard was developed so no thread sealant migrates into fuel and hydraulic media.
  • On prints, you'll sometimes come across the parenthetical callout NPT(F). This drawing notation means the thread can be produced as either NPT or NPTF. Both share the same form, taper, and pitch, and they gauge to the same basic dimensions.

How Each Thread Seals: Crest & Root Truncation vs the Spiral Leak Path

NPT and NPTF cut from the same 60° V-form on the same 1:16 taper, so tightening wedges the flanks together and the joint keeps drawing snug. That much they share. The seal itself comes down to what happens at the tiny flats on each thread's crest and root.

On a standard NPT thread, the crest and root aren't held to interfere with the mating part. That leaves a continuous, thread-shaped clearance running along the helix, a spiral leak path. The flanks carry the mechanical load, but fluid can weep along that helical gap. That's exactly why NPT joints get made up with PTFE tape or pipe dope: the sealant fills the spiral clearance.

An NPTF (Dryseal) thread controls both crest and root truncation on purpose. That way, when the parts go together, the crest of one thread crushes into the root of the other. This deliberate interference closes off the spiral path and creates a metal-to-metal seal, no sealant needed. There's a catch, though: NPTF only works if the crests and roots on both halves are correctly gauged and within tolerance. That's why the dryseal benefit only holds when NPTF mates with NPTF.

NPT Thread Sealant: PTFE Tape and Pipe Dope: Needed or Not?

Whether you need a sealant comes down to two things: which thread you're putting together, and what the service demands.

  • NPT: Yes. PTFE (Teflon) tape or a pipe-thread sealant (pipe dope) closes the spiral leak path and gives a seal you can repeat. Typical practice is two to three wraps of tape in the direction of thread engagement, or a thin film of dope. On makeup, the tapered thread pulls up as it tightens. For smaller sizes, a common rule of thumb is hand-tight (finger-tight) plus two to three turns with a wrench, though the actual engagement should be gauged per ASME B1.20.1 and adjusted to size and service. There's no fixed torque here; it's customizable to requirement.
  • NPTF: No sealant is required by design. It seals dry. Still, many assemblers add a light sealant anyway, just for insurance on general service.

One caveat matters here: in oxygen, ultra-high-purity, or clean fuel service, thread sealants can introduce contamination or become an ignition hazard, and many specs forbid them outright. Skip the tape in these systems. Specify a sealant-free joint instead (NPTF dryseal or an alternative face/gasket seal), and route the connection through an oxygen-clean / sealant-free service process.

Are NPT and NPTF Interchangeable? Can You Thread Them Together?

Yes, mechanically speaking. NPT and NPTF share the same 60° form, the same 1:16 taper, the same pitch, and the same pitch diameters. That's why an MNPT threads into an FNPTF, and an MNPTF threads into an FNPT. Out in the field, that compatibility is exactly why the two get used together so often. It's also why every version of the question lands on the same answer: does NPT fit NPTF, can you mix NPT and NPTF, NPT to NPTF, NPTF to NPT, NPTF male to NPT female.

Sealing is what separates these threads, not fit. A true dryseal is only guaranteed NPTF-to-NPTF, since both crests and roots are truncation-controlled on that pairing. Bring in a standard NPT half and you lose the metal-to-metal crest/root interference. That's why the right engineering call is to treat a mixed NPT/NPTF joint as an ordinary NPT connection and make it up with sealant. Engagement itself needs no special thread-form adapter. NPT/NPTF vs NPS and NPSM: Tapered vs Straight Pipe Threads

Don't confuse tapered NPT/NPTF with NPS / NPSM (National Pipe Straight / Straight Mechanical). These are parallel threads, not tapered ones, and they never seal on the taper. Sealing happens on a gasket, an O-ring, or a union seat instead; the threads just hold the joint together. A tapered male thread and a straight female thread of the same nominal size might start together just fine, but they won't seal, and they won't fully engage as intended. Applications: Where NPT and NPTF Are Used

Both threads handle instrumentation and fluid-system connections just fine. The real decision comes down to the media you're working with and whether sealant is acceptable:

  • NPT handles general-purpose instrumentation and utility connections: gauge and valve ports, manifolds, adapters, instrument-air lines, and process hookups where a taped or doped joint does the job. Plenty of hydraulic connections use NPT too, made up with sealant, though a dryseal thread wins out when the spec calls for a sealant-free seal.
  • NPTF (Dryseal) covers fuel, hydraulic, and high-integrity connections where sealant can't be allowed to migrate into the media, and where the seal has to be metal-to-metal, every time.

Are NPT and NPTF interchangeable?

They share the same 60° form, 1:16 taper, and pitch, which lets them thread together mechanically. A true no-tape dryseal is only guaranteed, though, when it's NPTF-to-NPTF. Any mixed NPT/NPTF joint should be treated as a standard NPT connection and made up with a thread sealant.

Are NPT and NPTF compatible?
