Duplex 2205 Instrumentation Valves (UNS S31803 / S32205)
Duplex 2205 instrumentation valves are small-bore isolation, throttling, and block-and-bleed valves machined from 22Cr duplex stainless steel 2205 (UNS S31803 / S32205, W.Nr. 1.4462, EN name X2CrNiMoN22-5-3). Crestflo builds the whole valve family in this grade: needle, ball, check, 2/3/5-valve manifolds, monoflange, double block-and-bleed, and bleed valves, sized 1/16-inch through 1-inch. You reach for 2205 bodies and trim when the line carries warm chlorides, brine, or sour wet H₂S and 316 is under-alloyed, but the duty does not justify the price of a super-duplex or nickel body. The grade carries a PREN around 35 and roughly twice the yield strength of 316, so a 2205 valve resists chloride pitting and stress-corrosion cracking where 316 trim cracks, and holds its rating with less wall, at a cost well below Super Duplex 2507. Design follows ASME B16.34, sour-service builds are offered to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, and seat and shell leak testing follows the applicable API 598 / BS EN 12266 practice. Standard items ship from stock; specials are built to order, with delivery running 6-8 weeks. Request a quote to price your configuration.

Why Specify a Duplex 2205 Valve Body and Trim
A valve is a harder corrosion problem than a straight run of tube. The media sits trapped in body cavities, dead legs, and the packing bore. It cycles across the seat. It concentrates in crevices under the stem and in thread roots. That is exactly the geometry where chloride pitting, crevice attack, and stress-corrosion cracking start, so a valve in the wrong alloy fails long before the pipe around it does. On top of that, a valve carries mechanical load the tube does not: stem thrust, seat seating stress, bolt preload, and pressure across a thin body wall.
Duplex 2205 answers both the corrosion and the strength side at a moderate price. Its roughly 50/50 ferrite-austenite microstructure, built on nominally 22% chromium, 5% nickel, 3% molybdenum, and controlled nitrogen, gives it a PREN around 35, well above 316L (≈24) though below super duplex 2507 (≈42). That chemistry lifts its critical pitting and crevice temperatures clearly past 316L, and the duplex structure gives strong resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking, the failure mode that most often retires austenitic stainless in warm chloride service. At the same time, 2205's minimum yield strength is around 65 ksi (450 MPa), roughly double annealed 316, so a valve body and stem carry their rated pressure and their seating load with less metal.
That makes 2205 the workhorse duplex for valves: the grade you specify when 316 trim is under-alloyed for the chlorides, but hot seawater, aggressive subsea duty, or a full nickel body would be over-specified for the cost. Where the service turns to hot or oxidizing seawater, step up to Super Duplex 2507; where it turns genuinely hot, duplex hits a hard ceiling and a nickel alloy takes over. More on both below. The full metallurgical picture, composition ranges, mechanical and physical properties, PREN, and corrosion-by-media data, lives on the Duplex 2205 alloy grade page. This page stays on the valve.
Also Specified As: 2205 Needle Valve, S31803 Ball Valve, 2205 Manifold Valve
Buyers and specifiers call these valves several ways, and they all point to the same 22Cr duplex material. A requisition might read "2205 duplex needle valve," "duplex stainless ball valve," "UNS S31803 manifold valve," "S32205 instrument valve," or simply "22Cr duplex isolation valve," and each one lands here. The grade's formal designations are UNS S31803 (the original 2205) and UNS S32205 (the modern, nitrogen-enhanced 2205), plus EN / Werkstoff 1.4462 (EN steel name X2CrNiMoN22-5-3); in forged and valve-body form it maps to ASTM A182 Grade F51 (S31803) and F60 (S32205). A part labeled "2205" today is almost always certified to both UNS numbers at once. SAF™ 2205 is Alleima's trade name for the same grade, referenced here for identification only.
Scope: these are instrumentation valves, the small-bore kind that isolate and throttle gauge, transmitter, analyzer, impulse, and sample lines. A ball valve here means an instrument ball valve, not a plumbing valve; a needle valve means a flow-metering instrument valve, not a carburetor part; a manifold means a valve manifold, not an exhaust or PEX manifold.
Duplex 2205 Valve Types: Needle, Ball, Check, Manifold, Monoflange & DBB
Crestflo machines the full instrumentation valve family in 2205, so you can standardise an entire hookup, primary isolation through bleed, on a single corrosion-resistant duplex. Each type links to its own detail page for dimensions and ordering.
| Valve type | Function in a 2205 hookup | Typical service | Detail page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needle valve | Fine throttling and primary isolation, multi-turn non-rotating tip | Gauge and DP-transmitter roots, calibration, sampling | Needle valve |
| Ball valve (2-way, 3-way, L-/T-port) | Quarter-turn on/off isolation and diverting | Sample shut-off, gauge selection, switching | Ball valve |
| Check valve / NRV | Spring-loaded one-way, non-return flow | Back-flow protection on analyzers and pumps | Check valve |
| 2/3/5-valve manifold | Combined block, bleed, and equalise in one body | DP-transmitter and gauge isolation | 3-valve · 5-valve |
| Monoflange valve | Integral block-and-bleed on a flanged connection | Compact direct-mount gauge/transmitter isolation | Monoflange |
| Double block-and-bleed (DBB) | Two blocks plus a bleed in one body, per ASME B16.34 | Positive double isolation, custody and hazardous lines | DBB valve |
| Bleed / vent valve | Small stem bleed to vent, drain, or depressurise | Manifold bleed ports, gauge venting | Bleed valve |
Beyond these, 2205 is available in gauge/root, metering, toggle, plug, relief, and packless (bellows and diaphragm) patterns. Spell out the function on the RFQ and the engineering team confirms the build. For the complete family and the specialty patterns, start at the instrumentation valves pillar.
Duplex 2205 Manifold Valves: 2-, 3- & 5-Valve for DP Transmitters
The manifold is where 2205 earns its keep on a chloride or brine DP measurement. A 3-valve manifold gives you two block valves plus an equalise valve to protect the transmitter cell during zeroing; a 5-valve adds two bleed/vent valves for calibration and purging. Crestflo builds these in 2205 with non-rotating stem tips to protect the seat, and every manifold gets 100% seat and shell leak testing before it ships. Direct-mount and remote-mount patterns both carry over to the alloy. The grade's strength is a genuine advantage here: a manifold body concentrates a lot of pressure boundary into a compact block, and 2205's high yield lets it hold that rating with margin in a part that also has to survive chloride SCC, all without stepping up to the cost of a super-duplex block.
Actuation: Manual and Pneumatic Duplex 2205 Valves
Most instrumentation 2205 valves are hand-operated, bar-stock or forged-body construction, with the handle chosen for the duty: lever and phenolic or metal T-bar handles on ball valves, vernier and locking/lockout handles where throttling repeatability or line-identification matters, and color-coded handles for service marking. Where a line needs remote or automated operation, ball and needle patterns are available with pneumatic actuation. Panel-mount and low-profile builds support instrument-rack and enclosure installations on skids and process racks.
Seat & Packing Materials for Chloride, Brine & Sour Service
The 2205 body and trim handle the corrosion and the strength; the soft-goods set the temperature ceiling and the seat-leakage class. On a duplex valve the choice carries an extra twist that the nickel alloys do not have: the alloy body caps continuous service at roughly 600°F (315°C), so on a 2205 valve it is often the body, not the soft-good, that sets the top of the temperature range. The seat and stem-seal options below pair with a 2205 body, and the temperature figures are the standard published limits for each material. Confirm the certified rating for your build on the RFQ.
| Seat / packing material | Typical temperature limit | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| PTFE (virgin) | up to ~450°F (232°C) | Default soft seat, excellent chemical resistance, bubble-tight shut-off |
| Reinforced / glass-filled PTFE (RTFE) | up to ~450°F (232°C) | Higher load capacity and cold-flow resistance than virgin PTFE |
| PCTFE | cryogenic to ~250°F (121°C) | Low-temperature and gas service where PTFE creep is a concern |
| PEEK | up to ~600°F (315°C) | High-pressure throttling at the top of the 2205 body's range |
| Graphite (flexible, Grafoil-type) | material rated higher, but capped by the 2205 body at ~600°F (315°C) | Robust stem packing within the duplex service window |
| Metal-to-metal seat | limited by the 2205 body to ~600°F (315°C) | Severe-cycling throttling where soft seats cannot survive, within the duplex range |
This is the practical difference between a duplex valve and a nickel-alloy one. On an Inconel 625 or Hastelloy C-276 body, graphite packing and a metal seat let you run the valve well past 850°F because the metal keeps going; on a 2205 body you cannot use that headroom, because the duplex itself tops out near 600°F. In the warm-chloride, brine, and sour window that 2205 is built for, that ceiling is rarely a constraint, soft seats like PTFE and PEEK cover most of it, and the alloy's chloride resistance is the whole point. When a line genuinely runs hotter than that, the right move is not a hotter packing in a 2205 body, it is a nickel-alloy valve. Seat and packing figures follow the applicable standard and are customisable to requirement.
Duplex 2205 Valve Sizes (1/16″–1″) & End Connections: NPT, BSPP, Tube & Weld
2205 instrumentation valves ship in imperial fractional sizes from 1/16-inch to 1-inch and in a matching metric menu, with the port and end connection configured to the hookup. Tube-fitting (compression) ends land as single or double ferrule and interchange dimensionally with the major brands; threaded ends follow published thread dimensions and can be tailored.
| Attribute | Options | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Size range | 1/16″, 1/8″, 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 3/4″, 1″ (imperial); metric menu | Imperial and metric |
| Tube-fitting ends | Compression, single or double ferrule | Dimensional interchange with major brands |
| Tapered pipe threads | NPT (male/female), NPTF, BSPT | ASME B1.20.1 (NPT); BSP |
| Parallel pipe threads | BSPP / ISO parallel | ISO parallel |
| Flare / port | SAE / JIC 37°, SAE ORB | Per applicable standard |
| Welded ends | Socket-weld, butt-weld | Per applicable standard |
| Flanged ends | On DBB and monoflange builds | ASME flange standards |
Port configuration, bore, and Cv depend on the valve type and size; the engineering team confirms the orifice and flow coefficient for your pattern at quotation. Values per applicable standard; customisable to requirement.
Pressure & Temperature Ratings for Duplex 2205 Instrumentation Valves
Pressure rating is set by the valve design and its governing standard, not by the alloy on its own, though 2205's high strength gives the designer real margin to work with. Manifolds are rated up to 10,000 psi and double block-and-bleed valves to 3,000 psi under ASME B16.34; other types carry their own ratings on their detail pages, and higher-pressure requirements are handled on the high-pressure line. The temperature ceiling is the lower of two limits: what the 2205 body can take and what the seat and packing material allows. Here the body is the one to watch, continuous service for Duplex 2205 is generally limited to about 600°F (315°C), because above that range sigma-phase and 475°C embrittlement degrade the grade's toughness and corrosion resistance. In other words, 2205 is not a high-temperature valve material; it is a high-strength, chloride-tough one. Keep it in its window and confirm the exact certified rating for your build on the RFQ.
| Valve type | Max pressure | Rating basis |
|---|---|---|
| 2/3/5-valve manifold | up to 10,000 psi | ASME B16.34 |
| Double block-and-bleed | up to 3,000 psi | ASME B16.34 |
| Needle, ball, check & other patterns | Type- and design-specific; confirmed per configuration | ASME B16.34 / applicable API standard |
| Higher-pressure builds | See the high-pressure line | Per applicable standard |
When 2205 Is the Right Valve: and When to Step Up to 2507 or a Nickel Alloy
Duplex 2205 is the chloride-service default: a PREN around 35, strong chloride-SCC resistance, and roughly twice the yield of 316, at a price well below a super-duplex or nickel body. For instrument hookups on warm chloride and brine process, sour (H₂S) upstream service inside its temperature window, chemical and petrochemical process lines, pulp-and-paper bleaching duty, and ambient seawater and desalination systems, it is usually the best value on the shelf, and its high strength lets a thinner body wall hold the same pressure the cheaper way.
Two honest limits decide when to move up. The first is chloride severity: for hot or oxidizing seawater, aggressive subsea duty, and the most demanding sour-plus-chloride streams, 2205's PREN runs short and the right call is Super Duplex 2507 valves at a PREN above 42. The 2205 vs 2507 comparison lays out the side-by-side. The second limit is temperature: because 2205 is capped near 600°F (315°C), a valve on a genuinely hot stream, flare and relief lines, hot process, high-temperature sour service, needs a nickel body such as Inconel 625 or Hastelloy C-276 that keeps strength and corrosion resistance as the heat climbs. Note the media, pressure, and especially the chloride level and temperature on the RFQ, and the engineering team will confirm whether 2205, 2507, or a nickel alloy is the right call.
Standards, Testing & NACE MR0175 Sour-Service Compliance
A valve's pressure boundary and its seat are qualified against different standards than a fitting is, and 2205 valves follow the valve standards, not the compression-fitting standard. Pressure-boundary design follows ASME B16.34. Seat-leakage and pressure testing follow the applicable API 598 / BS EN 12266 regime for the valve type. For sour service, 2205 valve material is offered to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156: in the solution-annealed condition with controlled chemistry, UNS S31803 / S32205 is an accepted material for sour (H₂S-containing) service with hardness held to the ≤ 31 HRC ceiling the standard requires for duplex stainless; confirm the environmental envelope, H₂S partial pressure, chloride level, and temperature in the standard against your application. Crestflo holds the standard approvals that apply to instrumentation valves.
| Standard | Scope | Applies here |
|---|---|---|
| ASME B16.34 | Valve pressure-boundary design and pressure-temperature rating | Yes |
| API 598 / BS EN 12266 | Valve inspection and seat/shell leak testing | As applicable to type |
| NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 | Sour-service material requirements (≤ 31 HRC, solution-annealed) | Sour-service builds |
| ASME B1.20.1 | NPT thread dimensions | Threaded ends |
| ASTM A182 F51/F60 / A479 / A276 | Duplex forging and bar feedstock | As applicable |
| EN 10204 MTC 3.1 / 3.2 | Material test certification | Yes |
| ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001 & PED | Quality, environmental, safety, pressure | Certified |
Every valve runs through a deep test battery: hydraulic proof, burst, and impulse; pneumatic; flexure-fatigue, rotary-flex, vibration, and thermal-cycling work; plus pull-out and vacuum checks. Hydrostatic shell and seat-leak testing verify the pressure boundary and the shut-off, and helium leak testing is available where a gas-tight, low-fugitive seal must be proven. Positive material identification (PMI) confirms the alloy on every part, and because a duplex lives or dies on its phase balance, a ferrite-content check confirms the austenite-ferrite ratio where a project calls for it. Non-destructive testing is done in-house. Manifolds all get 100% seat and shell leak testing. Destructive testing goes out to ISO/IEC 17025-accredited labs, and third-party inspection is available on request.
Material Traceability & Certification
Every Duplex 2205 valve carries its own heat/lot number, and each order ships with an EN 10204 MTC 3.1 certificate as standard, with 3.2 available on request. PMI confirms the grade at the part level, every time, and a ferrite check verifies the phase balance when specified. That documentation backs the audit trails that offshore, sour-service, and chloride-process jobs demand, the kind of work where a mis-specified or under-alloyed valve body is not a small problem.
Applications for Duplex 2205 Instrumentation Valves
2205 valves earn their place wherever warm chlorides and wet H₂S defeat 316, but the duty does not justify a super-duplex or nickel body, and the temperature stays inside the grade's window:
- Sour and high-pressure upstream oil & gas, wellhead and manifold instrument hookups in H₂S + CO₂ + chloride service, where NACE MR0175 governs the trim and the temperature stays within the duplex range. See the oil & gas industry page.
- Offshore topside and ambient seawater, instrument and sample lines in chloride service where 2205's strength and SCC resistance both count; step up to 2507 where the seawater is hot or the duty subsea.
- Chemical and petrochemical processing, chloride-bearing process and sampling lines, dilute acids, and brine handling where 316 pits or cracks.
- Pulp and paper, bleach-plant and chloride-dioxide instrument lines, a classic 2205 chloride-SCC application.
- Desalination and brine systems, ambient seawater, RO, and brine-handling instrument hookups within 2205's chloride window.
Pairing 2205 Valves With 2205 Fittings and Tubing
A valve is one part of the hookup. For a corrosion-matched instrument run, pair these valves with Duplex 2205 tube fittings and Duplex 2205 tubing so the whole assembly, body, ferrules, and tube, carries the same chloride resistance, the same strength, and the same traceability. Mixing a 2205 valve onto 316 tube and fittings just moves the failure point downstream to the weakest link.
Drop-In Interchange With Swagelok, Parker & Hy-Lok
Crestflo 2205 instrumentation valves are built as dimensional interchange / equivalent valves for the major brands, with performance qualified against ASME B16.34 and the applicable API valve standards, not against marketing language. These are not "compatible" or "intermix" parts. Swagelok®, Parker®, and Hy-Lok® remain trademarks of their respective owners, and Crestflo is not affiliated; the interchange is strictly dimensional. We don't publish a part-number table. Instead, our engineering team prepares an interchange reference per project: request your cross-reference and we'll map your existing valve part numbers to Crestflo Duplex 2205 equivalents.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Duplex 2205 instrumentation valve?
It's a small-bore isolation, throttling, or block-and-bleed valve, needle, ball, check, manifold, monoflange, or DBB, with the body and trim machined from 22Cr duplex stainless 2205 (UNS S31803 / S32205, W.Nr. 1.4462). The grade carries a PREN around 35 and roughly twice the yield strength of 316, so it resists chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress-corrosion cracking in warm chlorides, brine, and sour service where 316 trim fails, at a cost below super-duplex or nickel alloys.
Why use Duplex 2205 instead of 316 for valve trim?
Because a valve concentrates corrosion where stainless is weakest, trapped media in body cavities, cyclic seat contact, and crevices at the stem and threads, and it also carries mechanical load. In warm chlorides, brine, and wet H₂S, 316 (PREN ≈24) can pit, crack, or be under-alloyed. 2205 (PREN ≈35) lifts chloride pitting and crevice resistance clearly above 316 and brings roughly double the yield strength, so the body seals and carries its rating with less wall. For the most aggressive hot-seawater or subsea chloride duty, step up to Super Duplex 2507; for milder, non-chloride service, 316L is cheaper and adequate.
When should I choose Super Duplex 2507 or a nickel alloy over 2205 for a valve?
Two cases. First, chloride severity: for hot or oxidizing seawater, aggressive subsea duty, or the most demanding sour-plus-chloride service, step up to Super Duplex 2507 (PREN above 42), because 2205's PREN around 35 runs short there. Second, temperature: Duplex 2205 is capped at roughly 600°F (315°C) continuous service, because sigma-phase and 475°C embrittlement degrade it above that, so for flare and relief lines, hot process, or high-temperature sour service, step up to a nickel-alloy body such as Inconel 625 or Hastelloy C-276. Inside the warm-chloride window and below 600°F, 2205 is usually the better value. Note the chloride level and temperature on the RFQ and we'll confirm the grade.
Are Crestflo Duplex 2205 valves NACE MR0175 compliant for sour service?
Yes. In the solution-annealed condition with controlled chemistry, UNS S31803 / S32205 is an accepted material for sour (H₂S-containing) service under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, with hardness controlled to the ≤ 31 HRC ceiling the standard requires for duplex stainless. Crestflo offers 2205 valve material to that standard with full traceability; confirm the environmental envelope, H₂S partial pressure, chloride level, and temperature in the standard against your application and note the sour-service requirement on the RFQ.
What valve types does Crestflo offer in Duplex 2205?
Needle, ball (2-way, 3-way, L-port, T-port), check/NRV, 2/3/5-valve manifolds, monoflange, double block-and-bleed, and bleed valves, plus gauge/root, metering, toggle, plug, relief, and packless bellows/diaphragm patterns on request. Sizes run 1/16-inch to 1-inch in imperial and metric.
What are the pressure and temperature ratings of Duplex 2205 instrumentation valves?
Pressure is design- and type-specific: manifolds are rated up to 10,000 psi and double block-and-bleed valves to 3,000 psi under ASME B16.34, with other patterns confirmed per configuration. Temperature is the lower of the body limit and the seat/packing limit, and on 2205 the body is usually the one that governs: continuous service is limited to roughly 600°F (315°C). Within that, PTFE and RTFE run to about 450°F (232°C) and PEEK to about 600°F (315°C). Confirm the certified rating on the RFQ.
Which seat and packing materials should I choose for 2205 valves?
For most chloride, brine, and sour duty, virgin or reinforced PTFE gives bubble-tight shut-off through the moderate band, and PEEK covers higher-pressure throttling near the top of the 2205 range. PCTFE suits cold and gas service. Graphite and metal seats are available, but note that on a 2205 body the alloy caps the valve near 600°F (315°C), so you cannot use the high-temperature headroom those materials have on a nickel-alloy body. The 2205 handles the chloride chemistry and the load; the soft-good is tuned to the temperature and the required seat-leakage class.
What standards do Duplex 2205 valves meet?
Pressure-boundary design follows ASME B16.34, seat and shell leak testing follows the applicable API 598 / BS EN 12266 regime, sour-service material follows NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 at ≤ 31 HRC in the solution-annealed condition, NPT threads follow ASME B1.20.1, feedstock follows ASTM A182 F51/F60 / A479 / A276, and material certification follows EN 10204 (3.1 standard, 3.2 on request). Crestflo manufactures under an ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001 and PED certified system.
What end connections are available?
Tube-fitting (compression) ends in single or double ferrule, NPT, NPTF, BSPT, BSPP / ISO parallel, SAE / JIC 37° and SAE ORB, socket-weld and butt-weld ends, and flanged ends on DBB and monoflange builds. National, international, and custom threads are supported.
What testing and certification come with the valves?
Each valve carries a heat/lot number and ships with an EN 10204 MTC 3.1 certificate (3.2 on request). PMI confirms the alloy on every part, and a ferrite-content check verifies the duplex phase balance where specified. Testing covers hydrostatic shell and seat-leak, hydraulic proof/burst/impulse, pneumatic, fatigue, vibration, thermal cycling, and vacuum, with helium leak testing available; manifolds get 100% seat and shell leak testing. NDT is in-house; destructive testing goes to ISO/IEC 17025-accredited labs, and third-party inspection is available on request.
Do Duplex 2205 valves interchange with Swagelok, Parker, or Hy-Lok?
They're built as dimensional interchange / equivalent valves, with performance qualified to ASME B16.34 and the applicable API valve standards. They are not "compatible" or "intermix" parts, and every brand name belongs to its respective owner; Crestflo is not affiliated. Send us your valve cross-reference request and we'll map your part numbers.
Are these valves made in the USA?
Crestflo manufactures for the US market. Standard product is of Indian origin, with US or European melt available on request and full material traceability. Valves are engineered for a US drop-in fit and ship in 6-8 weeks. Specify any TAA/DFARS or melt-origin requirement on the RFQ.
What is the lead time and minimum order?
Standard items ship from ready stock; specials are made to order, with a 6-8 week US-serving delivery. Small minimum order quantities apply, and private-label and made-to-print builds are available.
